The exhibition is the sixth joint painting exhibition organized by Clement Chan on behalf of ‘Painting On and On’, in which the issue of ‘sin’ is explored and discussed by a group of local artists.
The concept of sin and atonement has long been rooted as human nature. ‘Sin’ in Christian doctrine, and ‘karma’ and ‘reincarnation’ in ancient Buddhism appears as spiritual beliefs in both Western and Chinese culture since the classical era. Renaissance art such as Michelangelo’s "The Last Judgement" has caught on to become a classic fresco. Literature such as the traditional Chinese classic "Water Margin", Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" from Russia, and modern classic novels such as Haruki Murakami's "1Q84" from Japan; international classic movies such as "A Clockwork Orange", "Seven", the recent "Exodus" and local movies such as "Infernal Affairs", "The Golden Era" etc., have interpreted the nature of ‘sin’ in various perspectives of uniqueness and peculiarity.
Nevertheless, the concept of ‘sin’ in nowadays world of reality was being diluted, marginalized and distorted, constantly and imperceptibly, by the media. The concept of ‘sin’ has been evolved into implicit symbols in various aspects; or transformed as a byproduct or supplement inevitable in the normal operation of daily lives. Does the ideology of ‘sin’ still exist in the contemporary society? Or has it long been wildered and forgotten?
