The Exhibition title partly inspired by a weather term from Hong Kong Observatory: “Swells”
// Swells - Winds blow over the ocean surface and generate water waves called seas or sea waves. Propagating outward across the oceans, they are referred to as swells when they reach a distance far away from their originating area ……. When swells enter shallow waters, their wave heights would increase drastically, posing threats to people near the shoreline or operating over near-shore waters. //
I am aware of the inarticulate silence within the sediment that lying on the seabed. Occasionally, the energy that driven by wind is liberating the remaining vitality there.
#1 - I intermittently weave my hair into a piece of extended hair. This seemingly insignificant labor required a series of forceless knot to sustain the tension in between. The hair decays and bend into a ball shape. I saw a dark cloud formed there and every bits of water vapor mark the hard work.
#2 - At the moment of reunion for dried clay and water, they briefly sway and then return to calm, empowered by being patient again for the next desiccation.
#3 - Some specimen I made that has been exhibited at the Medical Museum before. I claim they are my prototype of my own plastination technique.
Man Mei To (b.1990) obtained her Bachelor degrees in Arts from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) and Hong Kong Arts School in 2015, majoring in painting. Her artworks incorporate various media such as painting, photography, video, installation and mixed media.
Man’s artworks typically engage the “ the body ” and “ the city ”. She consciously carries her sensitivity of searching body intimacy to explore the landscape in city ; urbanized life ; fading scenario and vanishing objects around the cityscape. Her works aim at providing awareness on ‘ his ’ existence, and the dialogue between his ’ fragility ' and ‘ his ’ silence by objectifying, cloning, reconstructing and quantifying found objects around. And looking for the weight of these objects once they had from their fragment. She hopes to find a closed relationship between the land and our body through her art practice, until reaching a natural state for both to exist.
Man has initiated her first solo exhibition “Laundry Shop ( A walk with A3 , Hong Kong , 2016). And she has previously participated in Primitive Sense Art festival ( Omachi City, Nagano,Japan 2016 ), Ensemble ( VT Artsalon, Taipei 2017 ), etc.
