With the theme of NEW SENSATION, we are bringing the well-selected ceramic and painting works of 11 alumni artists to Fine Art Asia 2022 from 5 to 8 Oct at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Hong Kong Art School (HKAS) is proud to participate again in this Asia's leading international fine art fair. This will be the ninth year for the School to take part in the fair, and also the eighth year for the School to participate as the Education Partner of the fair. This year, the School will focus on the notable role of painting in the contemporary art scene, selected paintings by alumni of the School will be showcased in the fair.

The Aura - Exhibition by Alumni of Hong Kong Art School

“The presence of the original is the prerequisite to the concept of authenticity. … It is significant that the existence of the work of art with reference to its aura is never entirely separated from its ritual function.” — Walter Benjamin, 1935

The medium of painting may sometimes evoke sense of nostalgia, however, the evolution of painting works and the many exciting forms they have taken on in recent years have led to countless reforming initiatives and forward-looking motives.   Reinterpret the aura of art and the nature of artistic authenticity by juxtaposing Walter Benjamin’s critical theory made almost a century ago and the contemporary artworks freshly created by the graduates from our painting major of our Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)* programme; and see what you may be able to find out from this unique viewing and visiting experience.

Painting Workshop: A piece of Cloud drifting in the Sky (conducted in Cantonese)
Date: 4 & 7/10/2019 (Fri & Mon)
Time: 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Target Participant: Aged 16 or above

This workshop is led by our alumnus LAU Yin Yeung.  The theme of LAU's recent oil paintings is focused on the drifting cloud in the blue sky.  He hopes his works bring tranquillity to the audience.  Through this workshop, you can experience some easy-to-handle and amusing traditional painting techniques and create your own piece of blue sky and white cloud.

曹涵凱透過獨特的陶偶，表達內心的感受與情感 ; 鄭禮仁以幾何形態尋找平衡，創作富有現代感的作品；關秀雯以泥片、形狀與色調，尋找心中的和諧；李慧心則用泥細訴著對自然的情感；盧世強以泥帶出人生百感交集的記憶與感受; 潘輝煌以拉胚形式展現充滿優雅缐條與形狀的器皿；黃愷琳化身鍊金屬師，透過陶泥與不同物料的混合，以珊瑚的型態呈現作品，帶出人類與自然的關係。

Seven local artists interpret unique ceramic works in different forms, creating sparks and harmony.

Chao Harn Kae expresses inner feelings and emotions through a unique puppet ;
Ryan Cheng seeks balance in geometric form and creates modern works;
Mon Kwan uses porcelain, shape and color to find harmony in the heart;
Lee Wai Sum uses clay to express about the emotions naturally;
Louis Lo uses clay to bring out the memories and feelings of life;
Nick Poon displays utensils filled with elegant purlins and shapes in the form of embryos;
Karen Wong turns into alchemist, through the mixing of clay and different materials, presenting the work in the form of corals brings out the relationship between humans and nature.

香港藝術學院於今年的《典亞藝博2018》展出我們七位陶瓷系校友的作品，同時我們亦在另外兩位熱心的校友 Ivan Yung與 Benny To的協助下，製作了各種陶泥及釉彩的樣版，讓參觀者能更深入了解陶藝世界的多姿多彩。

最後，感謝Rachel Cheung（講師／課程統籌）為我們精心策劃這個展覽，而她與數名校友籌備已久的《香港本土陶瓷藝術發展新面向》亦即將誕生，內容將關於陶藝課程畢業生在藝術業界發展之研究，十分令人期待！

The cornerstone of this year's exhibition comprises ceramic works from 7 of our alumni alongside an array of clay and glaze samples nicely done by our alumni Ivan Yung and Benny To. Our visitors would surely have an unique experience immersing into the dynamic world of ceramics!

Credits to our lecturer, programme coordinator and curator of the show Rachel Cheung for the efforts! Meanwhile, her collaboration with our alumni in the book entitled "The Horizons Of Local Ceramic Art In Hong Kong” - a research on the career development of graduates from the ceramics discipline - will be published real soon! Hong Kong Art School @ Ink Asia 2017 (15-17Dec@HKCEC)
Ink Asia, the only international art fair devoted to contemporary ink art, will be held from 15-17 December 2017 at Hall 5B of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. As the first-time exhibitor of this art fair, the School will be showcasing a collection of most exclusive artworks created by our artist-alumni at the Booth C13.
This is an exceptional cross-over among three established artists, who are also alumni of Hong Kong Art School, Ms. Carol Lee Mei Kuen, Ms. Rachel Cheung and Ms. Ivy Ma. The showcase brings together their representational art pieces, which are the result of their unique ways of exploration across different media. All works capture and share a sense of untold rhythm. The paper-based records of time and light by Carol Lee Mei Kuen, the delicate curves created from clay by Rachel Cheung, and the reinterpretation of cinematographic images by Ivy Ma, all of them carry a subdued and sentimental touch.

Artwork statements from our artist-alumni

• Carol Lee Mei Kuen
  Graduate, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)(2002, Painting Major) & Master of Fine Art (2007)
  Carol has been incorporating the elements of light and time into her paper-based works since 2005.   She records time and light in a unique way, leaving  dust-like traces and soft silhouettes across the papery surface.    She makes reference to Japanese shoji window for her work to be showcased this time, playfully implying the presence of light.

• Rachel Cheung
  Graduate, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (2001, Ceramics Major)
  The ceramic works by Rachel are known for their delicate quality and sense of fluidity.  Between the crescent shape and the full circle, the works to be showcased this time again spark the quest for balance.

• Ivy Ma
  Graduate, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (2002, Painting Major)
  Ivy has started working on her series of cinematographic images since 2011.   On the print-outs featuring still-life images from films, the printing ink is selectively erased, giving rise to layers and textures.  Drawing is also applied to enrich the images.
