‘Culturing’ borrows the meaning from the laboratory technique of growing microorganisms in a particular condition for research and development purposes. Culturing appears not at the beginning nor the end, but define the process, evolution, transformation and metamorphosis. As such, culturing also represents the graduating students who have grown and cultivated their art practices throughout the pandemic years.

This year’s Graduate Exhibition of the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme* is the culmination of the studies of 35 graduating students. Presenting in a diversity of art forms, which include painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, installation and video, the works represent the collective call of the graduating students in their understanding and pursuit of art.

Like the act of culturing, the Graduate Exhibition is neither the beginning nor the end; it is the process of evolution and creation of the graduating students, who will continue their art making with the cultivated mind, passion and belief in the future.

"Peeling The Onion" - Master of Fine Art Graduation Exhibition 2018

Peeling the Onion.png

Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University are pleased to co-present the Master of Fine Art Graduate Exhibition 2018 in this September. Entitled as “Peeling the Onion”, the exhibition showcases the artworks of 10 graduates from the MFA programme.

Why “Peeling the Onion” ? Onions are bitter-sweet when raw and they are a vital ingredient in the creation of many dishes, the act of preparing them can cause a few tears. This is an appropriate metaphor for our graduates’ various experiences of the two-year MFA programme, referencing the emotional journeys and the artistic processes undertaken by them.  Through this exhibition, our graduates peel back the layers of their own unique artistic practices - based in ceramics, photography, painting, performance and more - to try to uncover some essential understanding about their artworks, showing their attitudes and approaches as visual artists.

Sometimes Irrelevant - Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Exhibition 2018

This Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Programme is co-presented by the RMIT University and the Hong Kong Art School, and the Graduation Exhibition “Sometimes Irrelevant” features art works of 40 graduating students this year. Through different mediums such as painting, photography and mixed media, they did not only embody their thoughts and feelings in their works, but also acquired a deeper understanding of the world and themselves.

Artwork is an examination of life. Artists consider trivial things in life as important inspirations and they can hardly be insensible or unsympathetic in this regard. With keen sensitivity and unique skills, they integrate the neutral scenarios of life into their perception and attitude towards the society in order to unite emotion experience and logical cognition. In the law, although ‘Obiter dictum’ is not essential to the decision, the implied opinions are crucial in making subsequent judgments. Other judges may later take it as a reference for decision-making, thus it is still a convincing judgment. It is as if artists retrospect minor things in life, and create artworks that emotionally connect them with their viewers.

The exhibited works are the graduates’ profound rational and emotional reflection of daily surroundings. We are honoured to invite audience to experience their pursuit of art creation, the pure love of reflecting life by art, as well as to discover and unveil the ‘sometimes irrelevant’ beauties in life.

Master of Fine Art (2017) - Beyond the Journey

Entitled “Beyond the Journey”, the RMIT Master of Fine Art Graduation Exhibition HK 2017 presents a suite of works by eleven artists from the 2016 /17 RMIT Master of Fine Art program. As a result, the exhibition reveals diversity in creativity and aesthetic experiences, expressed through painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation. These works are born from the joy and demands of art making. They are produced and arranged to facilitate personal interpretation and rumination on our place in the scheme of things.

Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (2016) - Incite

  • Google Calendar ICS

Upon the announcement of The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University in partnership with Hong Kong Art School (HKAS), the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) class of 2016 opened their graduation exhibition with a reception on the evening of 23 January 2016, marking the 18th year of the programme. The exhibition took place at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, recognised as a local arts incubator, in Wan Chai and held in the prestigious Pao Galleries, a gallery space known for housing world-class art events. It showcased 46 graduating artists' work, which was the culmination of over a year of research, planning and execution.

The student's fine art education had taken place during a dynamic period for Hong Kong and indeed the world. Capturing the spirit of the current age, the exhibition title, INCITE - a word often used to describe rebellion or movement into action – reflected the distinct energy they had harnessed into their work over the past three years of the programme. The exhibition incorporated new perspectives, it questioned the status quo and it showcased the pursuit of new ways of thinking, seeing and doing through artistic expression. The collective work was meant to stir up emotion and to provoke the viewer into finding deeper meaning beyond aesthetics through their contemporary interpretations as the new generation of Hong Kong artists.

Inspired by rigorous, multidisciplinary training, the class presented work across three major media: ceramics, painting and photography. Each piece on display was a reflection of the knowledge gained through the research and practice-based learning provided at RMIT and HKAS. Dr Edwin Lai, HKAS Programme Coordinator and esteemed curator, noted: "I eagerly look forward to seeing this exhibition; there are so many students of great potential in this cohort."

Celebrating its 18th anniversary, the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) program is truly a unique cross-cultural offering, attracting local and international students from all walks of life, each with a distinct perspective and voice. HKAS and RMIT's collaborative programme offers aspiring Hong Kong artists and creatives the ability to receive an internationally recognised Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) degree from a top-tier university.

The exhibition was made possible through generous support from the headlining sponsor, Burger Collection Hong Kong, with additional backing from major sponsors including Aesop, Asia One Integrated Communications Services, Celebrity Cruises, Hanart TZ Gallery, Nikon, Spring Workshop, from contributing sponsors, Alison Pickett Corporate Art & Sculpture Consultants and Jebsen Co. Ltd., from beverage sponsor Hong Kong Beer Co. and from paper sponsor Polytrade Paper Co. Ltd.

A/AN “ “, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Show 2015 featured art works of 36 graduating students. This course is co-presented by the RMIT University and the Hong Kong Art School. Students majored in painting, photography and sculpture present the works resulted of their artistic theory and understanding of art from the three years of researches and studies.

The exhibition is named A/AN “ “, without an absolute statement. The blank subject envisages free imagination and conversation between the artists and visitors. It invites everyone to explore their own definition of “ “, regardless of their knowledge and background, but with the sole reference to mutual exchange. It opens up amazing conversations and lights the life of the artworks.

A/AN " " suggests a quantifier and a quantity but leaves the subject missing. An incomplete state projects infinite possibilities, liberating the meaning in the most subtle manner. It ignites people's minds, engages their interest, and creates wonderful connections towards the varied and satisfying emotional and intellectual experiences.

“In the state of Art requires no absolute“, diversified works from 36 graduates with infinite elaborations are the best footnotes. In three years of study arts, graduating students' passion in art was challenged and have developed their own creative skills and established their unique artistic proposition upon plenty of trials and experiments. This exhibition is both a starting and a finishing line of their life in art.

Master of Fine Art Grad Show (2014) - That which can be imagined

The exhibition "That Which Can Be Imagined" is the culmination of two years of research by students of the Master of Fine Art programme (Presented by the RMIT University, in association with the Hong Kong Art School). The individual artists are drawn together through an examination of aspects of our lives and how we live in the world. Although explored through different social tensions and using a variety of mediums, all of the artworks have in common the desire to engage your thoughts and challenge existing narratives. The artworks contemplate different realities, attempting to move the debate in a direction that art commentator Alexander Alberro describes as “away from what needs to be opposed and towards that which can be imagined”.

In this exhibition, Isabella Ng and Adrian Corke consider how our surroundings influence our lives, Ng through an exploration of the roles and complexities of the human body and Corke through an examination of how habitat influences our cultural identity and our feelings about home and family. Michelle Chan and Laurence Lee discover the complexities of individual emotions through their art. Chan observes different aspects and moments of love and their underlying emotions, while Lee unfolds the human emotions of isolation and loneliness and the strength gained by experiencing negative moments in our lives. Winnie Hui uses stones to explore memory and how it is shaped by the past, present and future. Like Lee, Hui examines these issues in the framework of the interplay between ancient and contemporary Chinese culture. Elsa Wong directly confronts her viewers with her call to address the global issue of air pollution and Janet Lee questions our role in the state of the global economy. Our ideas are explored in this exhibition through a body of artwork spanning painting, drawing, calligraphy, photography, installation, digital collage, video and performance.

“5.5 sense” is the title of the Graduation Exhibition this year. It is a transitional phase in between 5 and 6.
5 senses, generally referred to as Touch, Smell, Taste, Sight and Hearing, are the mediums which lead us to understand the outside world. They also help each of us to build up a connection between our inner self and our surrounding environment. As artists, we express ourselves through the process of art making. We rely so much on the 5 senses to observe and perceive before the creation of an art piece. Mediums of creation may vary, but the essence of the creative process is the same: we need to open up our senses and feel the world sincerely. We believe, that integrated with the 5 senses, namely an ability to think and express ourselves freely, we have been able to define a clear direction. Life is a wonderful journey that is full of surprises. We have encountered stimulating and challenging moments with each other, we have shared our experience of art together over the past three years and now it is time for us to walk our own path. Yet we believe that nothing can stop us from our ongoing quest to further our learning.

5.5 sense is the transitional phase in between the 5th and 6th sense, it is the moment when our physical senses reacts with our mental state and ignites a tremendous spark. It is an abstract yet undeniable phenomenon which is crucial to the process of creation and, indeed our own sense of transformation.

This exhibition is not simply about the culmination of the BAFA programme and the fruitful harvest of the graduates’ studies, but also to showcase their creativity, artistic diversity and aesthetic experiences in fine art, including Painting, Ceramics, Photography, Sculpture and Mixed-media Installation during their three years of study. Each of the graduates is keen to share with the audience their individual growth and development from the initial tiny seed in the beginning to the emergence of the creative dynamic that is apparent in this exhibition. This enduring cycle of learning and growth, a kind of metamorphosis, has in a very real sense, enabled the students to have a brand new start.

The annual signature exhibition at the bachelor degree level in Hong Kong, the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Exhibition 2013 jointly presented by the Hong Kong Art School and the RMIT University will open this year from 6 July onwards for three weeks. 50 announced graduates majoring in Painting, Ceramics, Photography and Sculpture will be showcasing their graduation works in this annual signature exhibition from 6th July to 28th July, 2013 at Pao Gallery, Hong Kong Art Center, Wai Chai.

Alpha to Infinityis the title of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (Hong Kong Campus) Graduation Exhibition 2013, projects a beautiful scenery when a seed is being planted into the soil, when there is rain, sunshine or wind, it will adapt to the environment and grow, transform, develop with green leaves, strong stems and as time goes by, we may have a lush forest as the fruitful result. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet; it also bears the value of 1.In English, the noun Alpha is used as a synonym for "Beginning". From "Alpha to Infinity", we take plants as a metaphor, with the input of our creativity to the seed of art; it will eventually grows into a powerful tree or blossoms as the most beautiful flower.

This exhibition is not only the harvesting moment of our fruitful studies, but also showcase our creativities, diverse artistic and aesthetic experiences in fine art including painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture and installation during our three years study. Every graduate will be expressing how to bring up the tiny seed at the beginning, while at the end it harvests into infinity from the exhibition. It sounds like a never ending cycle, and now we are having a brand new start.

From Studium to Punctum - Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Exhibition 2012 is co-presented by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University and the Hong Kong Art School. The exhibition will be held from 7 – 28 July at the Pao Galleries, Hong Kong Arts Centre. Thirty-nine emerging artists will showcase their works, in diverse mediums that include Ceramics, Painting, Sculpture, Photography and Multimedia Installation.

This year’s graduation exhibition is titled “From Studium to Punctum”. In his book “Camera Lucida”, Roland Barthes applied the twin concepts of “studium” and “punctum” on photography. Studium denotes the cultural, linguistic, and political interpretation, while punctum depicts the wounding, personally touching detail. The duality of these cohesive forces offers dynamic possibilities while the graduates have focused on the exploration between general interpretations and distinctive visions.

‘On and Beyond’ - The Graduation Show of Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (co-presented with Hong Kong Art School) 2009

This is the 10th anniversary of the RMIT program in Hong Kong and this is the first year we have graduates major in photography. We entitled our show ‘On and Beyond’, which bears two meanings: go on and go beyond. This also entitled our passion in art. Life is like a never-ending journey, we never know what happens next; we never know what will there be around the corner. There are always explorations, and there are always new ways to go. We may stop and look back sometimes, to examine what we have done, and to think what we shall do in the coming days.

We set no boundaries in art. We may be struggling all the time, trying to break through; trying to break down what we already have in our mind; trying to put all the broken pieces together into an innovative and inspirational work of art. These are all the most precious values that The Art School provides us with. It does not only allow us to proceed into professional artists; it makes us understand, this is the attitude towards art; this is the attitude towards life.

There are a lot of exciting works to be seen this year: not only paintings and drawings, but a lot of video and installation works by our painting major students are finished with outstanding level; the imaginary and experimental ceramic works bring us to explore the unlimited possibilities of such traditional medium. As this is the first year ever we have photography graduates, their works show great commitments and with very delicate yet innovative qualities.

We are honoured to have our show fully sponsoted by The Community Chest on a charity basis, together with Green dot dot.com. and Fuji Photos Products Co., LTD…

“To be, or not to be: that is the question.”

You might ask, what has Hamlet’s famous soliloquy got to do with a fine art graduation show?

As the 7th cohort of graduates from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) program, we all have different skills and specialties, just as we have different dreams and pursuits. But it was the love of art that brought us together to study Fine Art 3 years ago.

During these 3 years of study, we have learnt a lot that has helped us develop and refine our art practice. Our studies have broadened our views towards aesthetics and even changed our ways of seeing and approaching our work. We now say that Art is so much more than a beautiful painting;a sensational sculpture; a provocative video, or a grandiose installation. The questions and answers about art are much more than “Yes or No”, r “Be or Not”. They are comprised of an accumulation of choices and decisions, substances and attitudes, discourses and experiments, risk taking and determination. Just as Hamlet debates his final action, we, as artists, travel a similar journey to produce an artwork through our practice. This is what we wish to share wth the audience and visitors to this exhibition.

Whilst others dream, many of us wonder about what the future holds for the fine art graduates from this city. However, it is exactly such uncertainty that makes practicing art a meaninful journey. Regardless of what may happen next, we will persist in pursuing our own artistic enquiry, expressing our love of art.

So, let’s move on to the next question then - To be, or must be; To be, or to become; to be, or…

Have a fulfilling journey, everyone!

All of us, who came into this MFA degree program more than two years ago, were already immersed in our art practice. Yet, by making the decision to become postgraduate students, we committed ourselves to further development of our art and to attain a deeper understanding of ourselves, our imagery, and our vision.

During the programme, our discussions, critiques and dialogues opened doors to ideas and concepts. As a group, we were able to see through each other’s eyes for more clarity. Since artists normally work in isolation, our interaction was invaluable for research and revelation. The ensuing support we felt, by being surrounded with like-minded artists, helped us to feel confident and bold in defining our unique visual ‘voice’.

Too often, artists may be viewed as on the periphery of society. They may even be seen as a kind of monster, or dinosaur or dragon. Because of this, we know the confidence and boldness we have gained in the past two years is essential to our artistic vision and survival. We know that, even if we have to climb buildings and breathe fire, we will not relent in being true to ourselves and, without hesitation, unleash our visions.

Looking back, none of us could have known exactly where our graduate study would take us. However, with our Graduate Exhibition, we are pleased and excited. We may even be a little surprised - we can now climb buildings and breathe fire!

We feel the deepest gratitude to all the professors and lecturers for their support during the course;for their guidance, inspiration and knowledge. We give special thanks to Professor Terry Batt and Dr. Ho Siu Kee for leading the program and making it an unforgettable experience for us.

We also wish to thank and acknowledge RMIT and The Hong Kong Art School for providing the opportunity to participate in this MFA program and seeing it to completion with generous support for our Graduate Exhibition production.

Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Grad Show (2005) - Fifth Element

fifth.jpg

Ancient philosophers advocated four universal constitutional elements, earth, water, air and fire. However, research on the existence of a further fifth element, still continues.

Despite the fact that a consensus around what the fifth element might be has yet to be reached, it provides an explorative space for us.

The fifth element might perhaps be the sugar in a cup of coffee, the new life in a family, the ineffaceable memory in the mind, the catastrophic battle or the tracing of time. It would have its own character and shape in different time and space. Have these elements ever been overlooked, neglected, disregarded or abandoned? From the unknown or the unseen, something new fangled or inventive may be learnt through exploration and investigation.

In this graduate exhibition by the fifth cohort of graduates from the B.A. Fine Art program, artists will show their distinctiveness and uniqueness through multifarious media such as painting, sculpture, ceramic, photography or installation art and reveal the fifth element from an artistic perspective.

Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (2004) -The 4th Dimension

fourthdimension.jpg

4-19 Sep 2004

The Pao Gallery and 2-4/F Fujimage Gallery, Hong Kong Arts Centre

We spent three years together as students of Fine Art. We shared together and tried to understand each other, opening our mind to new ideas.

In the process of becoming an artist, we approached another dimension in our life. We experienced the unknown and learnt to see beyond the normality of our world. The result of this experience is translated in our vision of a 4th Dimension, a sensitive ‘space’ and a provocative and sometimes imaginary ideal.

The 4th Dimension was once described by Riemann as the ramifications of the existence of higher dimensions in such a way that you could walk and no wall could stop you. You could reach things without having to disturb the surface, as extracting a section of an orange without peeling it. You could see through walls as you could see people buried in an earthquake. By trying to reach the 4th Dimension, we gave ourselves a chance to see through the boundaries of our common knowledge. Out ‘4th Dimension’ is not a well defined space, not about a clear notion but rather a succession of new experiences through our studies with the outcome of this exploration expressed in our work.

We not stand in this ‘higher dimension space’ which not long again, was still unknown to us. The inner journey was different for each of us, but it provoked all of us to think differently. In this exhibition we want to invite you to experience our 4th Dimension with us.

-Editor of “The 4th Dimension”
