The artist and the guest curator will host a casual art talk about Sim's works and ideas.

We are delighted to present Sim Chan's latest solo exhibition, Twinkling City, showcasing his new series of work on the exploration of perception, light and color through the representation of landscapes.

Window is one of his favorite elements appearing often in Sim's work throughout his artistic career over a decade. While light is another major subject he has been experimenting and developing in this new series of work over past two years. With researches, studies and tests on colors and light, Sim Chan is committed to exploring how light affects the colors we see in a painting.

Looking at the endless windows in his works, we may imagine an absurd life living in an extremely condensed metropolis projecting from those packed windows. On the other hand, windows may imply the endless ideas and creativities. Sim is always interested in exploring various art forms and methods in presenting windows, be it a normal square canvas painting, a painting on Lycra framed in a multi angular shape, or an installation in a room or a building exterior mural. Windows are keys to unlocking the stories behind, which ignites the imaginable spaces on both sides of a window. What will emerge from the other side of that window?

For this particular series of work, Sim Chan is trying to maximize the possibilities of using light in relationship to the colors. Simply the lighting affects what colors we see visually, while colors are the basis of paintings. Through his experiments on colors and light, he customized a self-illuminated device behind the canvas providing a light source. Once the light comes through from the back of the canvas, it changes the traditional color knowledge of the paintings, which become completely different from what we normally see in the daylight. Capable of penetrating many layers of colors on the canvas, illumination from the canvas back leave the conventional training of applying colors no longer practical. Sim takes the opportunity to tour the audience with a very unique experience varying colors of his paintings in daylight and in the dark.

Born in Hong Kong, Sim Chan, graduated from the Hong Kong Art School in 2008 studying painting. He has participated in numerous exhibitions locally and internationally in Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Singapore, Tokyo, Thailand, Korea, London, Venice, Zurich and Melbourne. Sim was invited to the 15th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition "Stratagems in Architecture" in 2016. His artistic proposal was selected by "Art@Government Buildings 2013-14" and created a public art installation and paintings at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. He was awarded the “40under40” global creative talent by Perspective Magazine in 2013 and was commissioned to create a public art installation at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in the same year.

Initiated by Sansiao Gallery HK and guest curator Chun Poon, the project Series of "Creating...." is intended to explore the potentials of the emerging talents among Hong Kong local artists. The approach is straightforward - introducing fine art pieces to art appreciators.

Sansiao Gallery, a Tokyo-based art gallery, is committed to pop art since its creation in 1984. With thirty three years of dedication to showcasing modern and contemporary art by internationally established names and emerging talents with passion and professional vision, Sansiao Gallery is proud to present the selection of artworks with unique, rare, and distinctive qualities, no matter how famous or lesser known its creators are.

Chun Poon is currently an independent art adviser. With twelve years of experience in the art field, He has been advising clients on acquiring private collections and collaborating with artists to present exhibitions since 2016. Chun started his art career with Asia Art Archive. After that, he joined Sin Sin Fine Art where he managed its transformation from being NGO to a commercial gallery. He also oversaw operation of Connoisseur Contemporary and EC Gallery and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the New York State University.

藝術家和客座策展人將會引導觀眾欣賞陳閃的作品及分享背後的創作經歷。

我們很榮幸為您呈獻陳閃的最新個展「閃爍的城市」,一系列藉風景為題的新作品,對視覺感知,光線和色彩進行探索。

窗戶是陳閃的常用詞彙,十多年的創作生涯中窗戶頻頻出現在他的作品裡。過去兩年間他也不斷嘗試新的創作,而這一新系列的另一重要元素便是光。通過對顏色、光線作研究,學習和實驗,陳氏熱衷地探討光線如何影響畫作中呈現出來的色彩。

透過作品中無窮無盡的窗戶,我們可以想像在大都市中的荒誕生活,人們被擠在一個極其壓縮的空間中。另一方面,窺視一扇扇窗戶又可以帶來無盡的想法和可能性。無論是常見的方形油畫、多角形的畫布、室內裝置、又或者建築外牆的壁畫,陳氏不斷研究刻劃窗戶的各種藝術形式和方法。窗戶像是解開背後故事的鑰匙,藉此通往窗戶內外的想像空間,讓人不禁想到:甚麼將會出現在那窗的另一端呢?

對於這一系列新作,陳閃嘗試捕捉光線與顏色的各種相互關係。簡單地說,光線會影響我們可以看到的顏色,而顏色又是繪畫的基本元素。通過對顏色和光線的實驗,陳氏在畫布後面裝上訂製的自動發光設備以提供光源。一旦光線由畫布背後滲透出,相比在日光下所看到的色彩,顏料呈現出截然不同的樣貌。這顛覆了我們對傳統繪畫技法中對顏色的認知。由於從畫布背面投射出來光線能夠穿透很多層顏料,因此傳統的著色方法發揮不出原本的功能。藉著晝與夜的色彩差距,陳氏為觀眾帶來不同的獨特觀感體驗。

陳閃出生於香港,2008年畢業於香港藝術學院主修繪畫。他曾參與許多本地和國際展覽,包括香港、澳門、北京,上海,台北,新加坡,東京,泰國,韓國,倫敦,威尼斯,蘇黎世和墨爾本等。陳氏應邀於2016年參加了第十五屆威尼斯國際建築雙年展-香港展覽《建築兵法》。他在2014年入選「藝聚政府大樓2013-14」並於伊利沙伯體育館制作大型公共藝術裝置及繪畫作品。2013年陳閃入選透視雜誌「40 under 40」獎, 於同年被邀於香港藝術中心制作公共藝術裝置作品

「創意中....」是由Sansiao Gallery HK和客席策展人潘臻先生發起的項目。它旨在繼續發掘及推廣本港有才華的新興年輕藝術家們的潛力。基本的出發點很簡單,向藝術愛好者介紹優秀的藝術作品。

Sansiao Gallery是東京的一家藝術畫廊,自1984年創建以來一直致力於普普藝術。三十三年來,他們以熱誠和專業的視野展示現代和當代藝術包括國際知名及新興藝術家。無論其創作者知名度的高低,Sansiao Gallery展示具有獨特及稀有高質量的藝術收藏品。

潘臻(Chun)是一位獨立藝術顧問。憑藉在藝術領域十二年的經驗,他自2016年起以客戶喜好提供私人收藏建議亦與藝術家合作舉辦展覽。Chun從亞洲藝術文獻庫開始了他的藝術事業。之後,他加入了Sin Sin Fine Art,由非政府組織轉變為商業畫廊工作。他亦曾效力Connoisseur Contemporary and EC Gallery協助畫廊的管理及營運。他畢業於紐約州立大學,持有藝術學士學位。

今次的講座將由香港陶藝家陳思光 Ray Chan See Kwong,分享他在「Hi! Hill 邂逅!山川人」的一個陶瓷創作項目的歷程及思考。他亦會示範用川龍泥做倒模和模壓。

「Hi! Hill 邂逅!山川人」是一個公共藝術計劃,於荃灣川龍村舉行,由十三組藝術家與村內社區合作,在昔日的村校和鄉村內創作在地性的藝術作品。身為其中一位的陳思光,先融入川龍村,再思考,從根本出發用當地的泥再開始他的陶泥實驗。最後,他與村內的茶樓及果汁店合作,由挖泥到創作茶杯。他與茶樓是怎樣開始這個關係呢?當他開始駐村的時候又有什麼有趣故事?川龍泥的特性又是什麼?陳思光將會在講座細說。

關於陳思光:
陶藝家陳思光於英國劍橋大學畢業,其後在香港藝術學院與澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學合辦的課程修讀,並於2002年及2007完成了藝術學士及碩士課程。他的個人展覽包括“Dance Still 動靜”(巨年藝廊, 2017),"B(read)" (香港樂天陶社, 2013),"Lyndhurst Terrace 1900" (Aesop store at 香港擺花街, 2009)等。2014年,他和Passoverdance參與一個在地系列/陶瓷裝置項目 “Shape”。他曾在日本和愛沙尼亞做駐場藝術家,現任職香港藝術學院及香港浸會大學兼職講師。 他的部份作品為香港文化博物館所藏。

Our talk this time features ceramic artist Ray Chan See Kwong, and his participation in the "Hi! Hill" Art In-Situ Public Art Project at Chuen Lung Village. After his talk, Ray will demonstrate slipcasting and press-moulding using clay from the village.

The ‘Hi! Hill' public art project launched in March. Inspired by the past and present images of Chuen Lung and collaborating with village residents, 13 artist teams created site-specific works at the old village school and inside the village. As one of the artists, Ray conceived his project by embedding in the village and digging up local clay. In the end, he partnered with local restaurants and juice shop to create tea cups with clay that he dug up in the village. How did this partnership come about? What were the funny stories when he embedded among the locals? What can he tell us about this local village clay? Ray will reveal all of this in his talk!

Artist bio:
Ceramic artist Ray Chan Seek Kwong received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Cambridge, and his BA (Fine Art) and MFA degrees from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (co-presented with Hong Kong Art School) in 2002 and 2007. Ray has held solo exhibitions "Dance Still" (Giant Year Gallery, 2017), "B(read)" (Pottery Workshop Gallery, Hong Kong, 2013), "Lyndhurst Terrace 1900" (Aesop store at Lyndhurst Terrace, Hong Kong, 2009), etc. In 2014, he collaborated with Passoverdance in a Site Specific Series/Clay Installation project “Shape”. Ray has participated in Artist-in-Residence programmes in Japan and Estonia. He is a part-time lecturer at the Hong Kong Art School and the Hong Kong Baptist University. His artworks are in the collection of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Para Site藝術空間與華沙現代美術館於波蘭華沙隆重呈現展覽《一獸,一神,一線》。此一由康喆明策劃的展覽起始「亞太」區域間的聯繫及觀念的流轉,交織而成。在地圖系統中,這一通常被稱為「亞太」的區域向來擁有多重定義,而置身於當代藝術展覽時更顯得難以詮釋;本次展覽所欲探索並試圖梳理的正是這樣的地文合集。關於「亞太」區域的歷史故事在南亞及東南亞地區流傳已久。早在南島世界時期,便發展出僅次於歐洲殖民版圖規模大小的海上世界,而本次展覽正是將此早期的南島世界作為一個臆測和想像的地理範疇。這些流動的世界在現代的摧毀浪潮中、在當代性堅硬的岩層下相互重疊衝突、難以辨識,但它們仍舊是更替此殖民座標區域的重要支柱,而其演變的進程也正是此次展覽的精心呈現。請點擊“閱讀原文”了解更多有關展覽的信息。

Para Site and Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw are delighted to present A beast, a god, and a line in Warsaw, Poland. Curated by Cosmin Costinas, this expansive travelling exhibition is woven through the connections and circulations of ideas and forms across a geography commonly called Asia-Pacific. Arbitrary as any mapping, not least in contemporary art exhibitions, it could also be known by several other definitions, which the exhibition explores and untangles. The stories in A beast, a god, and a linejourney on routes going back to several historical eras, starting from the early Austronesian world that has woven a maritime universe surpassed in scale only by European colonialism and is taken as the speculative and approximate geographical perimeter of this exhibition. Overlapping and sometimes conflicting or barely discernible beneath the strident layers of contemporaneity and the modern waves of destruction, these fluid worlds are still the pillars of a region that is going through a process of replacing its colonial cartographic coordinates, a process this exhibition proudly serves. 譚倩婷 個展 Solo of Donna Tam

《不能觸摸的光》展示一系列光及色的裝置作品,作品靈感源於對發光窗戶的凝視,窗戶時而半隱蔽半開放,加上窗內柔和的暖光,仿似在細訴窗內不同的故事。隔著玻璃遠望着窗戶內的世界帶著一份神秘感,自己卻彷彿是一個外來者,無法參與,從而衍生出對於窗後未知空間的無限想像。這次展出作品將這份溫暖且冷漠的矛盾感覺呈現出來。

譚倩婷,生於香港。曾於新加坡、香港及英國接受教育,並於2015年在墨爾本皇家理工大學考獲藝術碩士學位。她的創作題材主要是透過觀察城市中發光的家庭窗戶及霓虹燈,探討霓虹燈光與螢光色系之間的互動從而創造帶有寧靜沉思氣氛的感性空間。其實驗性新媒體LED雕塑、繪畫及裝置作品大多抽象而簡約,曾於香港、中國、葡萄牙,以及保加利亞等多地區的國家美術館、畫廊及另類空間展出。

Sometimes Irrelevant - Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Exhibition 2018

This Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Programme is co-presented by the RMIT University and the Hong Kong Art School, and the Graduation Exhibition “Sometimes Irrelevant” features art works of 40 graduating students this year. Through different mediums such as painting, photography and mixed media, they did not only embody their thoughts and feelings in their works, but also acquired a deeper understanding of the world and themselves.

Artwork is an examination of life. Artists consider trivial things in life as important inspirations and they can hardly be insensible or unsympathetic in this regard. With keen sensitivity and unique skills, they integrate the neutral scenarios of life into their perception and attitude towards the society in order to unite emotion experience and logical cognition. In the law, although ‘Obiter dictum’ is not essential to the decision, the implied opinions are crucial in making subsequent judgments. Other judges may later take it as a reference for decision-making, thus it is still a convincing judgment. It is as if artists retrospect minor things in life, and create artworks that emotionally connect them with their viewers.

The exhibited works are the graduates’ profound rational and emotional reflection of daily surroundings. We are honoured to invite audience to experience their pursuit of art creation, the pure love of reflecting life by art, as well as to discover and unveil the ‘sometimes irrelevant’ beauties in life.

《五色十光》延伸自2016年於新加坡藝術空間 INSTINC 舉辦的展覽《內內外外》。是次展覽豐富,包括多種不同媒介作品及創作手法。香港和新加坡藝術家們的作品具多樣性,融合獨特的城市景觀丶文化丶價值和美學,並展示了各種矛盾及對立面,如傳統與現代、懷舊與日常、傳統與時尚、注目與疏離等狀態及經歷,醇化自我身份的塑造及認同感。

陳沁昕、伍寶蓮和黃淑賢的作品探索都市文化的親密與距離;劉威延,李志 和 姚詩韻的作品展示了當代新加坡的建築空間與歷史;袁進𡛕的畫作是一場不段建立和擦除的過程;張慧芳丶劉軒齊丶姚詩韻則透過實驗性的技巧和構圖作為個人表達的呈現,展示當代中國水墨的可能性。

關於藝術家

香港

陳沁昕 (1981年,香港) 於於二零一四年在香港浸會大學視覺藝術學院視覺藝術碩士科畢業,並於二零一一年獲得墨爾本皇家理工大學藝術文學士。作品多以裝置,錄像及雕塑的形式呈現。她愛好探索日常生活中處於意識邊緣的狀態,彷如在失眠發作後經歷了的不確定空間以及無止境的現實和虛擬的交錯。構建著她對現代社會的不安,悄悄的程現出虛無的現代人生活。陳氐於2017年獲香港藝術發展局文化交流計劃資助,並在新加坡舉辦個展 《A Soft Note》(INSTINC, 新加玻,2017),並參與2016年香港雕塑雙年展。 展覽亦包括社會介入作品 “444”、個展《憂鬱體液》(百呎公園,香港,2016)以及聯展《Home Away from Home》(Graft Art,佛蒙特州,美國, 2015)。陳氐現於香港居住和工作。

張麗蓉 (1979, 香港) 是一名全職藝術家。2013年畢業於墨爾本皇家理工大學藝術系並取的學士學位, 並於 2000年取得英國索爾福德大學BETC時裝文憑 。張氐的創作從生活探索人性內在的獨特特質, 並受其修讀時裝設計與藝術的相互背景影響,作品融入不同媒介,例如影像,裝置,雕塑與自由表演。張氐曾於香港,新加玻和馬來西亞舉辦個展,包括 《Here I Stand》(G 畫廊, 馬來西亞, 2016), 《Noises from the City》(OpenDoor, 香港,2018)、亦參與由「箏亭古箏團」主辦的多媒體音樂會議《繪樂空間》(葵青劇院黑盒劇場,香港, 2018)。張氐從藝術創作中尋找生活中的共鳴,娓娓道出自己對社會及生活的感想。張氐現於香港居住和工作。

伍寶蓮 (香港)出生、生活和工作於香港。伍氏分別於 2017 年獲香港中文大學純藝術文學碩士學位,及2014年獲澳洲墨爾本皇家理工純藝術文學士榮譽學位。她曾於英國就讀時裝設計,擁有多年時裝設計師工作經驗。伍氏相信人生應不斷開拓可塑性,以添加色彩,豐富生命,故透過藝術媒體呈現自身與社會性論題。現為「唐樓」創辦人,主力推動香港與國際文化藝術交流活動工作。伍氏現於香港居住和工作。

黃淑賢 (香港)現正於香港城市大學創意媒體學院修讀純藝術碩士課程,2014年獲得墨爾本皇家理工大學文學士學位,主修繪畫。2013年授予香港藝術中心獎學金,赴紐約 「School of Visual Arts」修讀關於文化﹑圖像設計和視覺藝術的短期課程。透過流動影像、裝置和媒體藝術等,黃以創作回應她的社會體驗,轉化有關社會和人性現象的觀察。黃氐現於香港居住和工作。

袁進𡛕 (香港) 於二零一八年完成香港中文大學藝術文學碩士、於二零一四年畢業於由香港藝術學院和澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學合辦的藝術文學士,主修繪畫、及後於二零零零年畢業於香港浸會大學之中國研究經濟社會科學士課程。袁氏以研究創作方式對歷史文獻進行查問, 把尋找到的數據化為創作, 從而透釋當下自身狀態。她於2015年在「am space gallery」 舉行名為《當煙火升起時》個展, 探討有關敍利亞內
戰問題。2017 年與香港藝術學院同學共同策劃名為《心之內,內之外》聯展並得到 「Pure Art Foundation」之贊助。袁氏現於香港居住和工作。

新加坡

張慧芳 (1981年, 台南) 於2009 年在英國紐卡索大學取得博物館與藝廊學碩士。 她運用很多墨和鉛筆素描結合成她早期在臺灣發展的作品,追求作品中的律動和平衡;張氐於2001年贏得台南府城美展 (現台南新藝獎) 西畫類第一名。現在炭粉和金箔是她近作中重要的元素,亦時常運用挪用創作手法。張氐多次和新加坡藝術家合作展覽並舉辦個展。她的作品曾展出於新加玻ION art gallery, 香港 Affordable Art Fair, 新加玻 Artspace 222, 新加坡 Objectifs, 台北國際當代藝術博覽會等。 張氐現於新加玻工作及生活。

劉威延 (1975年, 新加坡)是一位新加坡視覺藝術家,獨立策展人及藝術教育者。劉氐2004年畢業於RMIT墨爾本皇家理工大學藝術碩士。他的攝影和錄像藝術曾在亞洲,歐洲,中亞,澳大利亞和中美各地區展出。他現於新加坡拉薩爾藝術學院任教,亦是新加坡Goodman Arts Centre藝術進駐的藝術家, 同時也是艺术集體INTER–MISSION的创始成員之一,也是The Artists Village新加坡藝術家村和Instinctive (INSTINC Art Space)藝術團體的成員。現於新加坡生活和工作。

李志(1963,新加坡)是一視覺藝術家及設計師。 李氐畢業於倫敦大學金匠學院並獲得美術碩士學位,並於2000至 2002 年於紐約泰勒印刷學院 (STPI) 受訓。他曾參與不同新加坡及海外的展覽,及多次入選日本藝術家駐場計劃,如Studio Kura(福岡, 2012 及 2014); 糸島市藝術農場 (福岡, 2014) 以及遊工房(東京,2013)。 李氐的作品以嶄新的視角探索新加坡社會,作品反映東方及西方文化特色。 他亦透過融合自我的文化背景把日常生活在視覺藝術中。李氐現於新加坡生活和工作。

劉軒齊 (1977年,中國) 於1999年畢業於上海理工大學出版印刷與藝術設計學院。從2009年由獨立設計師轉為全職藝術家,開始探索個人藝術創作風格,作品採用傳統媒介融入現在設計符號,嘗試和挖掘不同的藝術表現和藝術語言,擅於融匯東西方文化, 並且堅持把現代設計元素與傳統水墨意象相融合,開拓自己的繪畫風格和語境。作品並在香港、台灣、新加坡和美國多地展出,受到好評,並且獲得各種獎項,如2012年榮獲《大華銀行年度繪畫比賽》 白金獎。作品亦被新加坡大華銀行收藏;2012和2014年入圍新加坡陳之初繪畫比賽。劉氐現於新加坡生活和工作。

姚詩韻 (1976年, 新加坡) 現為全職藝術家並經營INSTINC獨立藝術空間。姚氐於1998 年於新加坡國立大學商業管理(市場行銷)取得大學學位,並於新加坡拉薩爾藝術學院取得傳播設計文憑,2002年在舊金山藝術學院獲得學士學位。 姚氐重新詮釋水墨領域, 並不斷實驗將當代媒材(如新媒體和表演藝術)融入傳統創作形式。她亦榮獲多個獎項, 包括2007年「大華銀行年度藝術大賞」的榮譽証書、「2012 Sovereign 傑出亞洲藝術獎」最佳人氣獎。她曾被新加坡美術館委託製作藝術品,作品亦被新加玻及海外藏家收藏。她的第一本個人論著《Inkpulse: The Art of Yeo Shih Yun》於2017年出版,當中闡述其對抽象表現主義的追求及從 2000 至 2017 年的創作歷程。姚氐現於新加坡生活和工作。

“In the Mood of Serenity”, features artworks of 10 Hong Kong and Singapore based artists.

This exhibition is the extension of the 2016 exhibition “From Inside of the Outside” happened at INSTINC in Singapore. This time a rich collection of works with a variety of medium and approaches are included; The Hong Kong and Singapore based artists demonstrate a unique blend of culture, values and aesthetic of the urban landscapes, such as traditional and contemporary; nostalgic and banal; heritage and legacy; limelight and alienation. These outer experiences refines ones speculation of self and identity.

Such as the works of Tap CHAN, LIO Cheung, Noelle NG and Elaine WONG explore experiences of intimacy and aloofness of urban culture; Urich LAU, Justin LEE CK and YEO Shih Yun display in their works the history and architectural space of contemporary Singapore society; Ivy YUEN’s drawings is a an on-going process of creating and erasing of marks and the body trace; CHANG Hui Fang, LIU XuanQi, YEO Shih Yun expand the possibilities of contemporary Chinese ink, combing experimental techniques and compositions into pictorial form of personal expression.

About the artists

Hong Kong

Tap CHAN (1981, Hong Kong)received an M.A. in Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014 and a B.A fine art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2011. Her works mostly appear in the form of installations, videos and sculptures. She is interested in exploring the idea of liminality that is embedded in daily life, where the boundaries between fiction and reality are often blurred, like the undefined psychic and emotional ruptures experienced during bouts of insomnia. To construct a narrative of the subterranean mind that rumbles beneath the facade of modern existence. She was funded by Hong Kong Arts Development Council cultural exchange project in 2017 for her solo exhibition "A Soft Note" (INSTINC, Singapore, 2017) and has participated in Hong Kong Sculpture Biennial 2016; a solo intervention “444”; group exhibition include "Black Bile" (100ft Park, Hong Kong, 2016) and group exhibition “Home Away from Home” (Graft Art, Vermont, USA, 2015). CHAN currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

Lio CHEUNG (1979, Hong Kong) is an independent artist based in Hong Kong, with a background in Fine Art. She received a BAFA of Fine Art at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2013, and a BETC Higher Fashion Diploma of Fashion Design at the University of Salford in 2000. CHEUNG works full time as an artist and has participated in a number of solo exhibitions and performances in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, including “There is no place, like home” (INSTINC SOHO, Singapore, 2017), “Here I Stand” (G Art Gallery, Malaysia, 2016). CHEUNG draws her inspiration from keen observations of nature, culture and daily interactions with people around her. She weaves different elements in her works and incorporates different materials and medium into inanimate forms, and encourage interaction with audiences. CHEUNG currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

Noelle NG (b. 1970s, Hong Kong) received a Master of Arts in Fine Arts degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2017 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2014. She studied fashion design in England, and has worked in the fashion design industry for many years. To NG art is a medium to express feeling and understand oneself and the society. She founded TongLau Space in 2018, it is an art space devotes to promote local contemporary art and facilitate overseas artists exchange. NG currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

Elaine WONG (b. Hong Kong) currently pursuing her MFA at School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong; she received her BA (Fine Art) degree from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University in 2014. She was awarded the scholarship from Hong Kong Art Centre to attend the Culture, Graphic Design and Fine Arts program in New York School of Visual Arts in 2013, with a background in painting. WONG’s work is characterised by the transformation of observed social and related human behavioral phenomena, often enhanced with audience participation. WONG regards her work as a presentation of the response to her experience in the society through moving images, installations, and media projects. WONG currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

Ivy YUEN (b. Hong Kong) completed a Master in Art in Fine Art at Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018. She received a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art), major in Painting at Hong Kong Art School in 2014 (co-programmed with RMIT), and a Bachelor degree at Social Sciences in China Economics at Hong Kong Baptist University at 2000. Her art practice is research based through data-mining from historical and statistic records. Her works was exhibited in solo exhibition "When Smoke Rises" (am space, Hong Kong, 2015), and "From the Outside of the Inside", an artists-curated group exhibition in which awarded the Pure Art Foundation Grant in 2017; the exhibition was also shown at INSTINC in Singapore at 2016. YUEN currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
Singapore

CHANG Hui Fang (1981, Tainan) graduated with a MA at Art Museum and Gallery Studies in Newcastle University, UK in 2009. She mainly works in Chinese ink, combining with pencil sketching on paper for her early works made in Taiwan. CHANG is passionate about incorporating realism into abstraction; her current works often applies charcoal powder and gold leaf, and employs appropriation as a method. CHANG won the 1st prize of Tainan Fine Art Exhibition in 2001. Her works has been exhibited in ION art gallery, Singapore; Affordable Art Fair, Hong Kong; Artspace 222, Singapore; Objectifs, Singapore and Young Art Taipei, Taiwan. CHANG currently lives and works in Singapore.

Justin LEE (1963, Singapore) is a visual artist and designer. LEE graduated from Goldsmith London College of Arts, with a Master in Fine Arts, and he was trained at the Tyler Print Institute in New York (STPI) from 2000-2002. He has participated in a number of exhibitions in Singapore and overseas, and have joined artist-in-residence programmes in Japan, such as Studio Kura (Fukuoka, 2012 and 2014); Itoshima Art Farm (Fukuoka, 2014) and Youkobo Art Space (Tokyo, 2013). LEE’s works bring a different perspective of the Singapore’s society, blending the eastern and western culture; he is also keen on recording everyday lifestyle into visual art based on his own cultural background. LEE currently lives and works in Singapore.

LIU XuanQi (1977, China) graduated from Press Printing and Institute of Art and Design University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in 1999. With a background as a graphic designer, LIU explores elements from traditional Chinese ink paintings, icons and imagery from eastern cultures and fuses with contemporary design, merging the east and west. He adopts a unique artistic expression by exploring art with his personal style, merging traditional media and design element of eastern aesthetic with the influence of the west. LIU’s works has been widely exhibited in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and the United States. He was awarded the “UOB Painting of the Year Platinum Award” by United Oversea Bank in 2012. LIU currently lives and works in Singapore.

Urich LAU (1975, Singapore) is a visual artist, independent curator and art educator based in Singapore. He graduated with a Master of Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2004. Working in video art and photography, he has presented works across Asia, Europe, Central Asia, Australasia and North America. He is currently a lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts, and one of the founding member of INTER–MISSION art collective; he is also a member of The Artists Village, Instinctive (INSTINC Art Space), and resident artist at Goodman Arts Centre in Singapore. LAU currently lives and works in Singapore.

YEO Shih Yun (1976, Singapore) graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1998 with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. YEO joined LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts and completed a Diploma in Communication Design prior to the pursue of a Post Baccalaureate Programme in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2002. She won the “Highly Commended” title in the UOB Singapore Painting of the Year Competition in 1999; she was the finalist for the “Sovereign Asian Art Prize” in 2012, and won the “People’s Choice Award”. She has held solo exhibitions in Singapore, Japan and Germany, and has exhibited in group exhibitions international. Her works have included in public and private art collections in Singapore and overseas, and has commissioned by the Singapore Art Museums. YEO is the Founder of the independent art space “INSTINC”, she currently lives and works in Singapore.


About the Curator

Hilda CHAN is a Hong Kong based curator, artist and cultural practitioner who lives and works in Hong Kong. She is the recipient of the Local Arts Administration Scholarships 2017 of HKADC, and currently enrolled at the Master of Social Sciences program in Sociology at The University of Hong Kong; She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2006. CHAN aims to foster collaborations across disciplines and media, she is interested in topics related to self and identities, cross-cultural and media representations in relation to personal experiences and memories. Curated projects including “How REAL is real”; artist book “Sojourn with Stranger” was the winning project of mur nomade’s “Open Call for Young Curators” at 2016. CHAN has been involved with a number of art spaces; she currently manages a contemporary art gallery promoting Hong Kong artists.

Altermodernist
Believed in art is for everyone, Altermodernists was founded to connect artists and audience. Established in 2004, INSTINC is an artist-run institution that promotes a new language of art. 我們每天上班下班,營營役役,把兒時幻想與箇中樂趣都忘掉,也漸漸放棄了造夢和幻想。由6月28日至7月2日於「海港城‧美術館」舉行的展覽「還有 別處」,五位來自香港藝術學院 (香港藝術中心附屬機構) 的年青藝術家,以展品觸發觀眾的幻想空間,為觀眾帶來獨特的視覺體驗。
是次展覽希望讓藝術引領我們再次走進幻想的國度,尋找不一樣的角度去觀看現實世界,發現思想空間裏的「別處」。它同時提示我們,藝術是我們日常生活的延伸。
參與展覽的五位創作人,分別修畢或正就讀由香港藝術學院與澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學合辦的藝術文學士課程。他們來自課程的四個主修範疇:繪畫、攝影、陶藝及雕塑。畫家黃欣欣筆下的蜂鳥,彷彿走進充滿魔法的城市森林,錯綜複雜的構圖,令人目光眩暈。同樣是主修繪畫的葉雯,喜歡以童年為題材,她細膩地描繪小朋友的純真片刻,是回憶也是盼望。在南非長大,現正修讀攝影的Janine Claase,透過把影像打印在金銀衣紙上,將自身形象和本土文化巧妙地結合,帶來奇想虛幻的視覺效果。區灝藍早在她在學時專注研究陶瓷物料,今次她使用骨瓷,把它變幻莫測的有機形態,輕盈地懸浮於空氣之中。主修雕塑的陳安瑤,擅長以充滿詩意的視覺元素,温惋地細說着意識流般的故事。其中她展出的船槳及信件,帶有漂流及遠洋的暗示,巧合地呼應着展場外的海港。
展覽由本地藝術家馬琼珠小姐策展,馬氏畢業於香港藝術學院,專注於繪畫及混合媒介的創作,現於母校任教。

“Somewhere Out There”

Working round the clock, most of us have already given up on our dreams and imaginations. In the upcoming exhibition proudly presented by Gallery by the Harbour, namely “Somewhere Out There”, to be held from 28 June to 2 July 2018, five young emerging artists from Hong Kong Art School (a division of Hong Kong Arts Centre) will be showcasing their imaginative art pieces, bringing an extraordinary visual experience to the audience.
This exhibition leads us to revisit our fantasies, exploring an unconventional angle to perceive our reality and discovering the undiscovered in our imaginative minds. It also tells us that Art is an extension of our everyday life.
The five participating artists are all from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme co-presented by the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University. They have different artistic specialties, including Painting, Photography, Ceramics and Sculpture. The hummingbird in Wong Yan Yan’s painting guides us into the magical urban jungle, dazzling the viewers’ eyes. Yip Man, a graduate majoring in Painting, bases her art creation on her childhood experiences and memories. Her works capture senses of childhood innocence, which are both reflections of her memories and yearnings from the bottom of her heart. Janine Claase, majoring in Photography, grew up in South Africa. Bringing together herself and the unique local culture through the images printed on joss paper, her works give rise to whimsical effects. Suzanne Au, graduated with a major in Ceramics, has been fascinated with her researches on earthen materials. Floating in the air, her bone-china work livens up the ever-changing characteristics as well as the organic forms of the material. Annebell Chan, graduated with a major in Sculpture, is good at engaging poetically visual elements in her story-telling works. The letter and paddle incorporated in her works resonate well with the Victoria Harbour right adjacent to the exhibition venue.
The exhibition is curated by Ms. Ivy Ma, a local artist who specializes in painting and mixed media. She is an alumna of Hong Kong Art School and is now teaching at her alma mater.

Play and interaction are common elements in contemporary art that could foster delightful surprises and ignite curiosity, imagination and creativity in visitors of all ages. With ‘fun and play' as core of creation, project curator invites six artists from different disciplines to transform the exhibition space to an interactive funhouse brimming with whims and fantasies, to enliven and riddle out our humour, vitality, senses and curiosity to new knowledge during a playful journey.

While the works in this exhibition have included many playful and interactive elements, there are many preposterous ideas worthy of further investigation and closer study. The inaugural exhibition Dismantling the Scaffold, curated by the Hong Kong curator Christina Li and presented by Spring Workshop at Tai Kwun Contemporary, brings together works from local and international artists and collectives, a constellation of artworks which engage with the social and civil structures we collectively inhabit.

The artistic positions in the exhibition aim to open up insights as well as questions that reimagine and examine the established conventions and norms conditioning how we navigate and give shape to our everyday lives. The two major keystones in the exhibition concept are the site’s history and collaboration: the unique background of the site of the former Central Police Station compound—as a police station, magistracy, and prison in the past—as well as the collaboration of two contemporary art organizations at a convergence in their timelines—the beginning of Tai Kwun Contemporary and the planned hiatus of Spring Workshop after its 5-year operation.

The “scaffold”—the main motif for the exhibition—is commonly understood as a temporary support structure deployed while a building is being constructed or repaired. In its lesser-known usage, a scaffold can also refer to a construction used in the past to stage public executions and punishments. The title Dismantling the Scaffold thus brings together these two definitions in order to draw attention to the site’s previous historical function before its current transformation, all the while looking forward to its new role as a permanent cultural institution and heritage site in Hong Kong.  Under this central metaphor of the scaffold, artworks in the exhibition explore art’s potential to illuminate and unpack our relationship with society at large. They offer poignant reflections of the invisible and visible structures that constitute and organise our daily existence among our surroundings. The personal and collective artistic presentations raise questions about various issues such as social participation, commodification, exclusion and confinement, urban development, collaboration, and human welfare in both public and private spheres. Dismantling the Scaffold thus hopes to offer alternative interpretations to the social conditions which underpin our experience as human beings.

Christina Li is a curator working between Hong Kong and the Netherlands. She graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a degree in Fine Arts (Art History) and Comparative Literature, and completed de Appel Curatorial Programme in 2009. She is the Curator-at-Large at Spring Workshop, Hong Kong where she served as the Director between 2015 and 2017. At Spring, she curated among other projects: A Collective Present (2017); Wu Tsang: Duilian (2016), Wong Wai Yin: Without Trying (2016), Days push off into nights (2015), and Des hotes: a foreigner, a human, an unexpected visitor (2015). With Heman Chong, she has launched Stationary, a collection of short stories, and co-edited the upcoming volume with writer and artist Malak Helmy which can be found on www.stationarystories.com.

Christina previously worked as a curator at Para/Site Art Space (Hong Kong) from 2005 to 2008, and was the Assistant Curator of Making (Perfect) World: Harbour, Hong Kong, Alienated Cities and Dreams, the Hong Kong Participation of the 53rd Venice Biennale. Her other projects include: The Goethe-Institut’s Pyongyang Reading Room: Between Object and Shadow (Goethe-Institut Amsterdam, 2013); A Map of Misreading (TENT, Rotterdam, 2012); Icarus 13: Cinematic Narratives from Elsewhere (BAK, Utrecht, 2011); Prologue – Speculations on the Cultural Organisation of Civility (SKOR and various locations, Amsterdam, 2010); Not Yesterday, Not Tomorrow (Cable Factory, Helsinki, 2009); and Weak Signals, Wild Cards (de Appel, Amsterdam, 2009). As a writer, she has contributed to catalogues and publications such as Artforum, Art Review Asia, LEAP, Parkett, Spike, and Yishu Journal of Contemporary Art.


About Spring Workshop
Founded in 2011 as a five-year project, Spring Workshop is a cultural initiative that experiments with the way we relate to art. With an international cross-disciplinary programme of artist and curatorial residencies, exhibitions, music, film and talks, Spring has served as a laboratory for exchange between artists, organisations and audiences in Hong Kong and abroad. In December 2017, Spring ceased its usual activities to begin a planned season of rest and transformation.

本地藝術家馬琼珠繼2015年的《去年》後,帶來藝術生涯中第六次個展——《時間曾經打一個摺》。是次展覽將展示六組全新創作,呈現藝術家創作實踐上的轉向。

馬琼珠過往的創作跨越繪畫、攝影、錄像、裝置、物件等媒介,近年重要作品如《去年》、《數字靜止》、《靜觀》均以繪畫介入影像,包括從電影擷取的畫面、在雨傘運動佔領區拍攝的肖像。擦拭與描畫,既是靜觀、冥思、與文本對話的過程,也是個人擾亂歷史的手段;遺下的細緻痕跡則改變了圖像的質感以至意義。

2017年,馬琼珠試圖探尋新的創作路向,她破開過去創作的框架,拋掉既有影像,純粹從物料出發展開實驗,誘發一系列抽象創作。今年完成的新作用上多種不同媒材,以木炭粉、石墨、木板、紙本、不鏽鋼板、布簾、釘子、金箔等,在繁忙的軒尼詩道上空構建一個沉靜空間。這批新作一方面揭示藝術家循物料回歸內在,尋回原初的創作衝動;另一方面看似純抽象的形態其實暗暗指向現實中的參照物。與此同時,新作亦是藝術家與藝術史對話的廻聲:自馬列維奇(Kazimir Malevich)《黑方塊》啟始的單色抽象畫傳統、極簡主義(Minimalism)的工業材料與序列性、後極簡抽象(Post-minimalist Abstraction)的手造傾向與物料存在感、新具體主義(Neo-Concretism)抵抗純理性的幾何再發揮,都可以在這一系列作品中找到對照點。

《時間曾經打一個摺》將於富德樓舉行。過去十五年,富德樓已成為香港最重要的文化聚落之一。這座位於市中心的舊洋樓,自2003年起為藝術家和文化團體提供珍貴的創作、辦公、展示、交流、活動空間,孕育了為數不少的藝術家和團體,兼為本地文化活動重鎮,馬琼珠亦是在富德樓萌芽的藝術家之一。事實上,她更是首位進駐富德樓的藝術家。在2003至2007年間,她在富德樓設有工作室,常在灣仔到處晃蕩,搜尋合適的創作物料;是次創作在某程度上回歸這種久違的模式。漫走過許多日子後重回富德,彷彿步進時間悄悄打的一個摺縫中。

"As Time Folds", the sixth solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Ivy MA King Chu will be presented by ACO in June 2018. It will be her first solo since "Last Year" (2015, Gallery Exit), and will present a major shift in her artistic practice.

Ma’s previous works have crossed the boundaries between myriad mediums, such as painting, photography, video, installation and objects. Some of her important pieces in recent years, such as the image series Last Year, Numbers Standing Still, and Gazes all feature a similar strategy of ‘drawing intervention’, in which she extracted images from various sources, such as portraits of youngsters in the Umbrella Movement and the films of Ozu Yasujiro, and intervened the surfaces of the images through drawing. The meditative acts of both erasing and drawing are at once ways of creating a dialogue with the images and their contexts, and also her personal means of disrupting historical discourses. In the end, rigorous traces were left behind, and the texture and meaning of the images were permanently altered.

In 2017, Ma set off on a journey in search of a new direction in her artistic practice. She broke out of previous frameworks, primarily by discarding pre-existing images. This time, her point of departure is experimentation with various materials, which led to a series of abstract works. The new works completed this year feature a range of materials, including charcoal, graphite, wooden boards, paper, stainless steel sheets, curtain, pins and gold foil. These materials serve as an entrance, through which the artist traces an inward path to the raw urge to create. On the other hand, the purely abstract form covertly points to references drawn from everyday life.

In "As Time Folds", one can also hear the echoes of several art historical moments: the tradition of monochrome painting starting from Malevich’s Black Square, the industrial materials and seriality of Minimalism, the tactility and material presence of Post-minimalist abstraction, and the anti-rational use of geometric forms of Neo-Concretism.

The exhibition will be held in Foo Tak Building, Wanchai. In the past 15 years, Foo Tak has come to be recognised as one of Hong Kong’s most important cultural hubs. Located in the city centre, this old western-style mansion was inaugurated as a provider of cultural spaces in 2003, and since then has offered precious art making, exhibiting, administrative, exchange and event spaces for a large number of artists and cultural organisations. Ma was in fact the first artist to establish a studio in Foo Tak - she made many early works there between 2003 to 2007. At that time she often roamed around Wanchai in search of suitable materials for her works, and she has somewhat returned to this mode of art making with this new show. By returning to Foo Tak after all these years, she quietly walks into a fold of time…

馬琼珠(Ivy Ma)於2001年獲澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學文學士(純藝術)學位。同年,她獲香港藝術發展局頒發志奮領獎學金,前往英國列茲大學就讀,取得 Feminist Theories and Practice in Visual Art 碩士學位。馬氏曾多次於香港及外地舉行展覽,作品入選2005年香港藝術雙年展,並為沙田歷史文化博物館所收藏。她曾參加在孟加拉、香港、芬蘭、波羅的海奧蘭群島等地舉行的藝術家交流工作坊及駐場藝術家計劃。她是亞洲文化協會利希慎基金獎助金得主,2008年赴紐約實習及考察。網址: ivyma.net

富德樓本來是灣仔區典型洋樓:樓高14層,一梯兩伙。2003年發展至今,艺鵠透過半資助方式,已把當中18個單位由商住兩用轉為藝術文化用途。以低於市值逾半的特惠租金供各藝術文化工作者及團體使用,至今受惠個人/團體已有五十個。本著低度管理,高度自治之原則,富德樓文化藝術社區訂立最少的限制,容許最大的可能性。大大小小的意念/創作/實驗/計劃/行動/組織在這些空間萌芽、成長、實踐、發揮,讓藝術文化能突破社會環境所限,遍植城市。富德樓6樓單位於2017年起為14樓艺鵠書店的延伸空間,如畫廊般運作,令藝術家的作品有更多展示及被收藏的機會。

◙ About the artist
Ivy Ma (b. 1973) received her MA Degree of Feminist Theory and Practice in Visual Art, University of Leeds in UK, 2002, BA of Fine Arts (Painting) at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT)/ The Art School, Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2001. She is a visual artist specialising in mixed media works and a lecturer at the Hong Kong Art School. Her works are frequently exhibited in Hong Kong and beyond, and in 2005 they were selected for the Hong Kong Art Biennial. She has previously taken part in various workshops and residency programmes in Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Åland Islands. She is a recipient of Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award - Young Artists Award, and Asian Cultural Council’s Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship, which allowed her to stay in New York in 2008. Evelyn Char (b. 1985) is a writer and art critic based in Hong Kong. She graduated from the University College London with a B.A. in History (2007) and M.A. in History of Art (2010). Currently operating mostly within the parameters of contemporary art and literature, her scope of work encompasses writing, editing, research and curating. She has previously taken part in a research project on experimental art in 1980s Hong Kong, and has jointly curated the projects ‘Mind the Gap’, ‘Talkover/Handover 2.0’ etc. She is the co-author of the book on Echigo Tsumari Art Triennial - Farmer’s Horizon, editor of Paratext, and a member of the group ‘Articipants’. facebook: charyinglam

Art & Culture Outreach (ACO) is a non-profit charitable body located at Foo Tak Building at Wan Chai in the form of a bookstore, was founded in 2008 with the support of Dawei Charitable Foundation. We believe in “sharism”, we share knowledge through books, we do consignments of independent publications and crafts to advocate originality, and we organize art and cultural activities for nurturing quality life. Since 2016, ACO has been strengthening its role in independent publishing and distribution by engaging art/ cultural personalities for publishing their creations. ACO also manages the art and cultural entities in Foo Tak Building, leasing them the units at a below-market rate to support their sustenance. ◘ About FTB
Foo Tak Building looks traditional and ordinary. It is a typical commercial/residential building having 14 floors with two units on each floor. Since 2003, there have been 18 units leased to art and cultural entities at a sponsored rate through ACO (Art & Culture Outreach); the rental is much lower than the market price. Just as important, ACO exercises low degree of management to leave more room for self-discipline being exercised by the sponsored art and culture entities. ACO has stipulated only a few rules and allowed all kinds of ideas / creations / experiments / plans / actions / organizations to seed, grow, practice and perform here. The 6/F project space has become an extension of 14/F ACO Bookstore, it operates as if a gallery, providing alternative opportunity to showcase artists’ works and to promote art collecting to public.

Learning is an essential path that we have to travel. We take the first step at school, where we start our personal growth and build friendships. After a school has completed its mission of nurturing generations of children and its campus has retired from the contemporary scene, we, as grownups, still hold onto every single precious memory of our schooldays. Located in Tsuen Wan Chuen Lung Village, the former Chuen Lung Koon Man School is a village school that witnessed the development of generations of village children, the extension of rural connections and the evolution of community history before lying idle for many years.

To reveal past memories of this village school and strengthen the empathy of the local community, ‘Hi! Hill' public art project has been launched in March. Inspired by past and present images of Chuen Lung, the uniqueness of the village, memories of the school, the daily life of villagers and their own imagination, 13 groups of artists, including Leung Chi-wo, Kingsley Ng, Tang Kwok-hin, Kacey Wong, Chak Wai-leung, Ray Chan See-kwong, Chung Wai-ian and Ng Ka-chun, Monti Lai Wai-yi, Agnes Lee, Rainbow Leung, Leo Wong Chun-yam, Ricky Yeung Sau-churk, Yip Kai-chun and history educator Chu Yiu-kwong, together with our Design Partners, Eddy Yu and Hung Lam, Project Photographer, John Fung and Project Videographer, Lau Tak-shing work together with the village community to install site-specific works of art at the old school and around this picturesque village. This art project takes the public on a journey into forgotten spaces to experience village life, explore the traces of time, the land and the people, and to gain a better understanding of our local village culture and history. A series of workshops, guided tours and sharing sessions will be held during the exhibition period to give the public an insight into the education provided at the old village school and into village life, while also giving them the opportunity to help write the local story of this green and watery landscape.
