08:30–18:30

東平洲 Tung Ping Chau (08:30於馬料水渡輪碼頭集合 Gather at Ma Liu Shui Ferry Pier at 08:30)

Interested to discover the city with artists and see our city anew through a different lens? Join our Artist Walk – a exploratory journey that will unveil the artists’ practices!

In the upcoming Artist Walk, local artists Tang Kwong San and Yuen Nga Chi will guide participants onto Hong Kong’s easternmost island Tung Ping Chau, where the artists’ collaborative project 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵 and the artist’s book + were born. Through sound, artists’ sharing, chat with islanders, photography activities, participants will learn more about the stories behind the project, as well as the historical background of the island, the church, and the refugee wave. Tung Ping Chau was once a final destination or transit point in past refugee routes; now, it also becomes a space for the artists’ imagination, looking at the island somewhat from the perspective of astronauts carrying out a landing mission on the Moon. Come join the artists to investigate the history and current conditions of the island.

P4 Lab

Play 4 Laboratory
An art experiment to develop playful tools to reconnect Our Bodies with the City

Participating Artists:
C&G, Andio LAI, WONG Wing Tong(Tong), Rik YU Wing Kei

Concept:
During the pandemic, many cities were locked down, streets became deserted for months, and people were physically disconnected from each other and from their cities. Avoiding directly touching public facilities, many would use various tools to press buttons or push door handles in public space. These tools may help us stay away from germs and virus, but, at the same time, distance and disconnect us from our surroundings.
The current project attempts to develop different playful tools to help us re-enter our city in the post-pandemic era with our long-forgotten sensitivities.

Andio will make use of low-tech equipment to collect sound and play sound with our bodies in the city.
Rik will make use of pinhole photography, along with various tools, to rediscover the lights that once disappeared in his eyesights due to his previous illness.
C&G will begin with a question about Lo Ting, and develop tools to help search for Lo Ting’s traces in our city.
Tong will use drawing and micro-observational tools to discover the micro-sceneries that we often miss out.

Creating New Memories with Historical Photographic Techniques

Our curatorial partner Lumenvisum has encouraged the public to share their old photos taken in the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens earlier, as one of the campaigns to kick off our public art project "Hi! Flora, Fauna". Old photos evoke memories and emotions, how about we create our future reminiscences by using some old photographic techniques to capture vignettes of the here and now?

Lumenvisum will host two online photography workshops, the Cyanotype Workshop and the Camera Obscura Workshop for us to revisit the renowned Gardens in a different way.

Cyanotype is an old photographic printing process, utilising the light-sensitive materials to create blue images with unique qualities and characteristics, while a camera obscura is sometimes referred to as a pinhole camera since it is created without a lens but a tiny hole. With prolonged exposure, images can be made. In this workshop, a portable camera obscura device will be made by each participant with the guidance of the tutor. Participants can create unique and beautiful images through this tiny device during the next visit to the Gardens!

Cyanotype / Camera Obscura Online Workshop by Lumenvisum:

The Aura - Exhibition by Alumni of Hong Kong Art School

The presence of the original is the prerequisite to the concept of authenticity. … It is significant that the existence of the work of art with reference to its aura is never entirely separated from its ritual function.” — Walter Benjamin, 1935

The medium of painting may sometimes evoke sense of nostalgia, however, the evolution of painting works and the many exciting forms they have taken on in recent years have led to countless reforming initiatives and forward-looking motives.   Reinterpret the aura of art and the nature of artistic authenticity by juxtaposing Walter Benjamin’s critical theory made almost a century ago and the contemporary artworks freshly created by the graduates from our painting major of our Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)* programme; and see what you may be able to find out from this unique viewing and visiting experience.

Participating alumni:
Benjamin HAO | Phillip HUI | LAU Yin Yeung | Catherine PICKOP | Ivana PONG| June WONG

Painting Workshop: A piece of Cloud drifting in the Sky (conducted in Cantonese)
Date: 4 & 7/10/2019 (Fri & Mon)
Time: 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Target Participant: Aged 16 or above

This workshop is led by our alumnus LAU Yin Yeung.  The theme of LAU's recent oil paintings is focused on the drifting cloud in the blue sky.  He hopes his works bring tranquillity to the audience.  Through this workshop, you can experience some easy-to-handle and amusing traditional painting techniques and create your own piece of blue sky and white cloud.

Hong Kong is turning into a chaotic city and it can be seen on the aspect of land use. Prices of property is high and out of people affordability. Lack of public housing supply, lower class people could only pay high rental fee to get a tiny living space. It’s ironic that “Nanometer-Floor” and “Luxury Partitioned Flats ” have been promoted by political and business parties as “the future scenery of Hong Kong”. In north-eastern New Territories, residents of Choi Yuen Tsuen, Wang Chau have lost or will loose their self-sufficiency way of agricultural living. Habits, culture, traditions, living and working environment will also be changed because of the redefinition of land use. What kind of lifestyles and values will this changes bring to Hong Kong people? In the context of different countries and cultures, can the transformation of the nature of land will not be resulted as a commodities? Why do the right of land use can only be dominated by the government? Who can be allowed to change the use of land and who has the right to contaminate the soil? What kind of environment will we expect to hand-over to the next generation?

Through the performance art activity, The Five Elements – starting from the Earth, we hope to raise the public's attention to this critical land use issue. We do not simply use the method of concept to observe and present this issue but we use the nature of life to present it to the world. This is not just a description of life but a desire to achieve the original nature of life through creation. We use the most direct art form (body art / live performance) as a witness of martyrdom to close-up this issue. We hope to repair, examine, and reshape the trauma of society and to think about the meaning between land and human. We hope this project could inspire people with new interpretations of land use in contemporary cities and widen the vision of land use. The event will be held at Wang Chau and participating artists will do on-site creation through their personal experience and understanding on this issue. We will use our body as a medium to present Hong Kong's current land issues and reconstruct cultural ethics.

Hegemony and Creative Resistance

Land struggles and developer hegemony have regrettably become the status quo in Hong Kong. Biased media, capitalist sympathy and daily survival fails to connect a critical mass to land struggles such as the North East New Territories and Wang Chau Development plans. How have different groups organised a creative resistance to developer hegemony, and can this be built upon in ways that will redefine our understanding of land and the commons in Hong Kong?

"A Curve and A Line - Koanic Thinking on Performance Art-"
An old Zen Master was asked “Can a work of art be a koān?” The answer was clear, “Either it is a koān, or it is not a work of art”. But we may perceive similar aspirations, of penetrating into the nature of reality and its natural or fabricated textures. The lecture “A Curve and A Line - Koānic Thinking on Performance Art -” attempt to introduce the idea of a koan into Performance Art and Performance Art teaching. “Koānic thinking”, might find its place in guidance or accompany the art we do, because in a powerful way, it manifests radical aspirations towards our true nature and within: social change.

TALK & DEMO | RAY CHAN SEE KWONG: VILLAGE CLAY, VILLAGE TALES

Date: Sunday, July 22
Time: 3-5pm
Language: Cantonese
Address: LUMP Studio
Free admission, no registration necessary
Limited seating, first come first served

Our talk this time features ceramic artist Ray Chan See Kwong, and his participation in the "Hi! Hill" Art In-Situ Public Art Project at Chuen Lung Village. After his talk, Ray will demonstrate slipcasting and press-moulding using clay from the village.

The ‘Hi! Hill' public art project launched in March. Inspired by the past and present images of Chuen Lung and collaborating with village residents, 13 artist teams created site-specific works at the old village school and inside the village. As one of the artists, Ray conceived his project by embedding in the village and digging up local clay. In the end, he partnered with local restaurants and juice shop to create tea cups with clay that he dug up in the village. How did this partnership come about? What were the funny stories when he embedded among the locals? What can he tell us about this local village clay? Ray will reveal all of this in his talk!

Artist bio:
Ceramic artist Ray Chan Seek Kwong received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Cambridge, and his BA (Fine Art) and MFA degrees from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (co-presented with Hong Kong Art School) in 2002 and 2007. Ray has held solo exhibitions "Dance Still" (Giant Year Gallery, 2017), "B(read)" (Pottery Workshop Gallery, Hong Kong, 2013), "Lyndhurst Terrace 1900" (Aesop store at Lyndhurst Terrace, Hong Kong, 2009), etc. In 2014, he collaborated with Passoverdance in a Site Specific Series/Clay Installation project “Shape”. Ray has participated in Artist-in-Residence programmes in Japan and Estonia. He is a part-time lecturer at the Hong Kong Art School and the Hong Kong Baptist University. His artworks are in the collection of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department

Organised by the Art Promotion Office

Curatorial Partner (art in-situ) : Make A Difference Institute

Learning is an essential path that we have to travel. We take the first step at school, where we start our personal growth and build friendships. After a school has completed its mission of nurturing generations of children and its campus has retired from the contemporary scene, we, as grownups, still hold onto every single precious memory of our schooldays. Located in Tsuen Wan Chuen Lung Village, the former Chuen Lung Koon Man School is a village school that witnessed the development of generations of village children, the extension of rural connections and the evolution of community history before lying idle for many years.

To reveal past memories of this village school and strengthen the empathy of the local community, ‘Hi! Hill' public art project has been launched in March. Inspired by past and present images of Chuen Lung, the uniqueness of the village, memories of the school, the daily life of villagers and their own imagination, 13 groups of artists, including Leung Chi-wo, Kingsley Ng, Tang Kwok-hin, Kacey Wong, Chak Wai-leung, Ray Chan See-kwong, Chung Wai-ian and Ng Ka-chun, Monti Lai Wai-yi, Agnes Lee, Rainbow Leung, Leo Wong Chun-yam, Ricky Yeung Sau-churk, Yip Kai-chun and history educator Chu Yiu-kwong, together with our Design Partners, Eddy Yu and Hung Lam, Project Photographer, John Fung and Project Videographer, Lau Tak-shing work together with the village community to install site-specific works of art at the old school and around this picturesque village. This art project takes the public on a journey into forgotten spaces to experience village life, explore the traces of time, the land and the people, and to gain a better understanding of our local village culture and history. A series of workshops, guided tours and sharing sessions will be held during the exhibition period to give the public an insight into the education provided at the old village school and into village life, while also giving them the opportunity to help write the local story of this green and watery landscape.

If you are interested in the project, please follow the Facebook page and Instagram of ‘Hi! Hill'.

Grey and Green Ping Pong Collaboration Art Project and Exhibition -《As the Leaves Falls》

Jesse Clockwork

Grey and Green Ping Pong Collaboration Art Project
and Exhibition -《As the Leaves Falls》
Teeth falling out, story begins

Opening
Date: 9 September 2016 (Friday)
Time: 6pm

Exhibition
Date: 10 September – 28 October 2016 (closed on Mondays)
Time: 11am – 7pm

《As the leaves fall》is an very experimental collaboration art project curated by Grey and Green Ping Pong, the result going to be shown in 1a space from 9 Sept to 28 Oct. It aims to create a cross-age collaboration conditions, under social concern and creativity, artists would investigate the relationships between personal pain (fallen teeth) and social issues (e.g. Aging as a social problem and body decay) by using visual language. The project also aims to dig deeper about the meanings of collaboration and conversations, the possibilities and problems in achieving a balance and fair play of subjectivity with elderly during the creation processes.

The curator (Cally) believes that time cultivates quality conversation, of which she had invited seven artists and seven elderlies to join a one-on-one pair-up Collaboration Art Project《As the leaves fall》since February 2016.

The project is divided into two phases; the first phase is the Workshop of “Exchange Happiness”. As a starting point, participating artists share their favorite spots or leisure activities with their matching elderlies. Work-in-progress activities includes karaoke, hiking and ‘treasure hunt’ in Sham Shui Po. Concurrently, participating elderlies also shared their enjoyable spots or activities with their matching artists, such as practicing Tai Chi in the park, gardening at a lawn, have a Yum Cha gathering and weaving at home, etc. By participating in each other’s daily life, artists morph into attempt to get a firsthand experience and association with elderlies’ daily life condition.

The second phase is the creation part. Taking “As the leaves falls” as the theme, both parties will collaborate and create. Artist may initiate their personal creation in response to their experiences or dialogues with the elderlies. “Teeth falling out” could be taken as an imagery, a real life situation or the beginning of stories. To commence a fair, just and consistent conversation and develop mutual understanding is the beauty of Collaboration Art. It is the crux to widen the social imagination by poetic artlang (artistic language), to recognize the entanglement of body and self-identity, and to understand the relations between transformation/ decay of body and personal speculation to the social condition.

Participating Art Professionals (In no particular order) :
Enoch Cheung
Clara Cheung
Eddie Cheung Wai Sum
Peter Kong
Edwin Lai and The Good Teeth Team
Ivy Ma and Man Mei To
Jesse Clockwork

Documentation :
Lo King Wah
(Lo will produce a documentary short film on the collaboration process.)

Curator :
Cally Yu
Founder of Grey and Green Ping Pong

Supplementary information :
The prevalence of tooth loss in seniors severely affects their daily lives. According to the Oral Health Survey (OHS) 2011 published by the Department of Health, there are 5.6 % of non-institutionalized seniors with no teeth. With a base of 450,800, there are 25,245 toothless seniors in Hong Kong excluding those in the age above 75. Meanwhile, the tooth loss conditions of seniors of the Social Welfare Department long-term care services were even worse. About 20% to 30% of them had no teeth at all. Each had 9.4 remaining teeth on average. The unaffordable dentistry is the main cause of this situation.

About “Grey and Green Ping Pong Project” :
Established in 2013, the project aims at establishing a conversational platform, by using artistic force and creative workshops, for the grey and green generations to exchange ideas and share stories, fun alike playing ping pong game, which is an equal-based, two-way, ordinary, easy and embodied interaction.

Workshops provided by us will be multidisciplinary, e.g painting, improvisation dance, film-going etc, in hopes that, new artistic experience can release elder’s creativity, curiosity and imagination. Elderly identity and subjectivity would be the keywords during all the processes. Creative Aging is our mission.

In addition, the project also want to develop/discover new aesthetic from the amateur elderly artists. If grey have their own sensitive and stories, would there is a special elderly artistic narratives? How we review those works in aesthetic senses? Can we develop a new critic language to see the elderly community art works?
This project is curated by Cally Yu and thanks for all supports from independent donors and friends to make the project come true.
