What kinds of possibilities will result from a crossover between ceramics and other media? Come and visit this exhibition to broaden your impression of ceramic art! Bringing ceramic artists and creative talent from other fields together, it will offer you a unique experience in art through their exchanges of innovative concepts and techniques.

By transferring photographic images to ceramic plates, Fiona Wong transforms a moment in time into eternity. Immerse yourself in the surreal atmosphere of Yokky Wong's black-and-white ceramic studio and peek into her intimate world of personal memories. Wy Lee and Ryan Hui will guide you into the world of Zen through hundreds of ceramic bowls. As you admire the elegant dancing ceramic figures by Nick Poon, just one second of evil thoughts will transfer you into Rosanna Li's purgatory to redeem your sins. Don't worry! Jakie Leung's delicate porcelain work will bring you back to the human world, where you can enjoy the artist's fine craftsmanship under shimmering lights. Annie Wan puts her ceramic books to the test of a searing blaze, and a rainbow rises from the ashes. And what do you find underneath Chan Kiu-hong's thousands of ceramic scales? Is it a sleeping monster? As you step into this exhibition, it will surely creep into your imagination, making you gasp for breath.

Get ready for this experimental journey into the imaginative world of ceramic art!

"Claylaboration" is in progress! Please follow us to stay tuned.

關於茂一茂 by Tei Mou Koon

The' Survey Exhibition

THE' Survey Exhibition

Please roll down for English

‘THE’ Survey Exhibition
‘THE’ survey exhibition, which is the most impressive, the most diverse, the most uncontrollable exhibition with the most active artists participating, will open on 1st December, 2018 (Sat) at Cattle Depot Artist Village.

Curated by C&G Artpartment, in the name of the celebration for its 11th anniversary, ‘THE’ survey exhibition is also drawing our attention to the development of local art spaces. Some of the questions include: What are the roles and responsibilities of an art space in society? How can it position itself? How can it help nurture the young practitioners? C&G believe that an art space must have its strong vision. It should be a spot for experimental art practices, different exhibition models and discourse development. It should be one of the important ladders to the sublime. C&G Artpartment has confidently practiced as such in the past 11 years.

The selection of artists is based on a serious revision over all the exhibitions curated or organized by C&G Artpartment since its establishment. C&G reviewed all their curatorial works and select the most ‘special’ artwork from each of the previous projects. Thereafter, they invite totally 40 artists who had been the most ‘special’ at one point.
According to a Chinese idiom, there is no championship in the arts, while there is no first-runner up in martial arts. We do believe that artists are always humble. It certainly is a challenge to ask them to name themselves the number one or the most of such and such. ‘THE’ survey exhibition will provide an opportunity for different artists to show different outlooks of the most self-centered, the most self-contained, the most narcissistic or the most …everything…
Besides ‘The’ exhibition, there will be a series of parallel programs during the show, including discussion forums, guided tours, auction and voting etc:

An on-going balance of insecurity

1 December – 22 December 2018
Opening: Saturday, 1 December 2018, 4-7 pm
EXIT, 3/F, 25 Hing Wo Street, Tin Wan, Aberdeen, Hong Kong
Hours: Tue - Sat, 11am - 6pm

Gallery EXIT is proud to present "An on-going balance of insecurity", an exhibition of three young local artists. The exhibition will open on 1 December 2018 and remain on view through 22 December 2018.

Cindy IEONG Wing Lam
Depicting objects with unusual scale and light sources, IEONG paints a dreamlike scene based on her own collection of images and fragments of life. The fluidity of picture is her main focus in painting. To present an "in progress" state, she builds a concealed directional relationship between objects through the misplacement and juxtaposition of indoor and outdoor space, void and solid, thereby creating a space for the viewers to imagine beyond the picture.

Tobe KAN Kiu Sin
KAN is obsessed with psychoanalysis, to study her own state, explore and retrospect to the causality. Her work explores autobiographical experience and mental states. The focus of her practice examines the human condition of insecurity in relation to disease, stereotyping, feelings of detachment, alienation or being forgotten. She experiments with painting, drawing and installation.

LAU Yin Yeung
LAU pursues a balanced self - he assimilates the concept of yin and yang into his painting, in “Tao Te Ching: all things submit to yin and embrace yang in order to soften their energy” is meant to achieve the state of harmony. He therefore mixes elements of the nature with a few man-built structures to create a sense of balance in his paintings.

Art in the contemporary world is no longer divided by geographical boundaries, yet, the significance of the ocean remains unaltered. More often, the ocean is not depicted as literal and specific but as an abstract symbol. The exhibition brought together the works of nineteen contemporary Asian artists including: Cai Dongdong, Cheung Szelit, Ding Beili, Ding Shiwei, Gregory Halili, Li Qing, Li Shun, Lin Qing, Liu Ren, Ma Lingli, Ni Youyu, Peng Jian, Shang Yixin, Shao Wenhuan, Shi Zhiying, Sugimoto Hiroshi, Yang Jinsong, Yang Xun and Yang Yongliang, each bringing forth a fragment of the ocean, in order to complete a unified 'horizon line' within the gallery space. The total area of the open sea from all exhibiting artwork was revealed on opening day to formulate the final exhibition name, 16.52 Sqm Open Sea.

Currency: What do you value?

  • Google Calendar ICS

November 17, 2018 - February 23, 2019

Currency: What do you value? is a group exhibition that asks questions about the relationship between art and money, exploring the flaws of our current economic reality. The featured artists expose the complex relationships between currency and how society values or doesn’t value art, work and time. They employ wit and satire to reveal economic inequities and dysfunctions, and ask: how do materialism and corporate interests take precedence over human and environmental concerns? How do debt and money impact art and creativity?

Literary critic and philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin described the concept of the carnival as a subversive, disruptive, world-upside-down event in which the hypocrisy of everyday life was unmasked. During carnival, social structures including those that defined class and status were disrupted by common people. In Currency: What do you value?, artists turn assumptions upside down to re-examine our relationship to money and how we live our lives.

The exhibition brings together national, international and local artists who engage with these themes through a variety of media and artistic approaches. In Debtfair, Occupy Museums continues their ongoing intervention that began at Art League Houston and appeared at the Whitney Biennial in 2017. The collective asks New Mexico artists how debt affects them and their art and uses collected data to explore the real impacts of debt at a time when U.S. credit card debt alone is over one trillion dollars. Albuquerque artist Leonard Fresquez has organized The New Booleggers: Fabricating (Im)Propriety, an installation in which 20 artists explore how high-end commodities are valued and question the worth of such products by producing knock-off versions of popular items.

New York artist Evan Desmond Yee fossilizes outmoded technologies including specific Apple products. He demonstrates how these objects, that have such a hold on us, quickly lose their novelty as they become obsolete. By placing the objects in a geologic context, he also raises questions around corporate influence, environmental neglect and a future in which nature reclaims its place over technology. Mel Chin’s Fundred project is continued as an outreach program with local schools involving hand-made currency used to raise awareness about lead poisoning.

ARTISTS:
Mel Chin, Christy Chow, Jennifer Dalton, Nina Elder, Ramiro Gomez & David Feldman, Hernan Gomez Chavez, Scott Greene, Keith Hale, Erika Harrsch, Steve Lambert, Lance Ryan McGoldrick, Occupy Museums, Yoshiko Shimano and Evan Desmond Yee.

Everyday Tablescape – Ceramic Works by Karen Cheung

Social Transformations – An Exhibition Celebrating 20 Years of Partnership between RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School

The exhibition proudly celebrates the 20 years of partnership between RMIT University and the Hong Kong Art School (HKAS), with a focus on the social transformations it brings.

The collaboration between RMIT University and HKAS on the offering of quality tertiary education programmes in fine art has started since 1998.   All along, this treasurable partnership and the artistic accomplishments springing from it have been shaping the art ecology in Hong Kong and imposing intriguing impacts onto the art educational landscape in Hong Kong and beyond.   They have also been breathing new life into the local and the transnational art scenes.

The participating alumni-artists in this exhibition are all graduates from the Bachelor of Arts (BAFA) and/or Master of Fine Art (MFA) programmes which have been nurtured from this long-term partnership over the years.   Their works always respond or contribute to the idea of social transformations in unique ways.

We look forward to seeing you in this commemorative exhibition, and you are also cordially invited to join us in the Forum Activities, the two specially conducted Forums, alongside the exhibition.  They will certainly bring in new insights and open up new perspectives for us all.

We have published an e-catalogue in conjunction with this exhibition, it is also a salute to our alumni, our lecturers who have taught in the programmes, members of the governance bodies and staff members from both institutions who have contributed to this partnership.  Please view it and share in our joy.

A new edition of Zoo as Metaphor (2014), a performative exhibition previously set at Oi! (Oil Street Art Space), takes the "cabinet of curiosities" as its point of departure once again.

This time, the artists undertake another expedition in the more site-responsive environment of Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, delivering another engaging and experiential journey for visitors. Moving on from the objects and collectables on display in the first edition, the new expedition focuses on PEOPLE, embarking on the "bizzare” in contemporary situations...

Travelling through rooms where different scenarios unfold, visitors will be encouraged to reflect on interactions between individuals and collectives, self and others. For sceptics and adherers to convention alike, the experential journey will lead to contemplation of how we can construct identity through the eyes of others, or how we perceive people through pre-set ideas and values.

|| 書介 ||

“Memories are always beautiful . Memories are always for the future”

Benjamin Hao solo exhibition

An exhibition entitled “Memories are always beautiful . Memories are always for the future”, jointly presented by Art Forest and SOIL, will be held at PMQ from 20 October until 10 November 2018. Local artist – Benjamin Hao uses soil as his creation medium, through presenting his soil painting and installation to investigate the relationship between human, nature and our surroundings.

He believes art as a form of intervention to pre-existing system. Through his artwork, it reveals how dominant culture shapes our understanding of nature and society. Hao's works often reference to the methodology and image from different major disciplines and fields, for instance, cartography, botanical illustration, and city infrastructure etc. In his practice, he takes art as a catalyst and uses it as a way to remove our presumption. Rebuilding our personal intimacy relationship from our society or surroundings.

The idea of this exhibition comes from our personal emotions, an inexplicable beauty is perhaps intertwined by memories, times and places. We hope to bring audience a new perspective to review our current surroundings. Every elapsed moment becomes the past, but not every passed moment can transform into memories. It ties strongly with places, images and sensations. We tend to remember the good old days and try to resist fading. We have technologies to store and represent the past, but it is never the same as the ‘real’ subject, it is the interpretation, post-memories of the past. Memories are for the future, for us to reflect and meditate in the future. They grow into a new understanding of the past when we revisit the places, objects, images and memories. They become knowledge and imagination for us to carry on to the future.

The Weather Forecast

Weather Forecast Weather Forecast is an on-going project first presented by five artists from Hong Kong at Iklectik Art Lab in London in 2016. The exhibition acts as a logbook of artists’ development and progress, aims to create a community which encourages constant dialogue between artists and generate further possibilities.

Like the constantly evolving weather, the themes explored by each artist – and the diverse ways that each presents their ideas – also reflect the changes that are occurring in the current unpredictable climate of the contemporary world.

‘How beautifully blue the sky
The glass is rising very high
Continue fine I hope it may
And yet it rained but yesterday.
Tomorrow it may pour again…’

Foo Tak Glamour Pavilion

Putting glamour into a country, a dubious colour you'll see
Putting glamour on a place, a temporal site you'll reach
Putting glamour in a mansion, a mysterious wardrobe awaiting your discovery you’ll find, or even more...

Unmasking by TEN artistic entities, Foo Tak's unique fascination will rush in your mind. Don't be scared when you find them being savvy to every nook of Foo Tak, to which those tiny nooks will bring a circulating feast.

The HKAC 40th Anniversary flagship exhibition Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future Tense

Venue: Pao Galleries, Hong Kong Arts Centre (4/F and 5/F)

Date: 2018.09.30 - 2018.11.04

Time: 10am – 8pm

Price: Free Admission

Culminating in its 40th year celebrations,The Hong Kong Arts Centre(HKAC) is delighted to present Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future Tense, an exhibition that explores and celebrates Hong Kong’s cultural and artistic identity as seen through the lens of one of Hong Kong’s most iconic city districts, Wan Chai. Curated by guest curator Valerie C. Doran and the HKAC curatorial team, the exhibition will be held at Pao Galleries, HKAC from Sunday 30 September to Sunday 4 November 2018.

“Since its foundation 40 years ago, the Hong Kong Arts Centre has fostered artistic exchange, forging connections between the arts of Hong Kong and the rest of the world through a wide range of programmes and collaborations. Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future Tense is both a continuation and celebration of that heritage, and presents a new perspective that forms urban cultural identities,” says Connie Lam, Executive Director of the HKAC.

Hong Kong has been uniquely shaped by a crucible of economic, political, ethnic and cultural influences, resulting in a vastly diverse heritage and identity, which is in turn made up of and influenced by the localised personalities of distinct districts within the city. The exhibiting works in Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future Tense look at the bonds formed across generations, multiple languages and artistic genres that establish community and a love of place. The exhibition has been curated to examine personal, historical, and experiential responses to Wan Chai and features works by 18 artists local to Hong Kong, or intricately connected through international ties to the city. The exhibited works also explore the role Wan Chai plays in forming Hong Kong’s artistic identity, and its image in the eyes of both local and international audiences.

“Though varied in their responses, each of the artists presented in Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future Tense shares an interest in the idea of place and how this is formed by individual interactions, past, present and future. The dialogue generated between the works opens doors to a new, more layered understanding of Wan Chai as a historical space, a cultural hub and a centre for community engagement,” Says Valerie C. Doran, exhibition guest curator.

During the exhibition period, Thematic tours around Wan Chai will be arranged and will narrate the history of the area, illustrating connections between the district and the artworks presented in Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future TenseArt Experience Workshops will shed new light on the district’s past, present and future, as well as the history of the HKAC as a cultural hub that has consistently over 40 years generated artistic dialogue. Programming will also include a Film Showcase on Wan Chai for audiences to experience the district's charm in a cinematic dimension. Creators and artists who are fans of these films will also talk about how their works have been influenced by Wan Chai.

Hong Kong is turning into a chaotic city and it can be seen on the aspect of land use. Prices of property is high and out of people affordability. Lack of public housing supply, lower class people could only pay high rental fee to get a tiny living space. It’s ironic that “Nanometer-Floor” and “Luxury Partitioned Flats ” have been promoted by political and business parties as “the future scenery of Hong Kong”. In north-eastern New Territories, residents of Choi Yuen Tsuen, Wang Chau have lost or will loose their self-sufficiency way of agricultural living. Habits, culture, traditions, living and working environment will also be changed because of the redefinition of land use. What kind of lifestyles and values will this changes bring to Hong Kong people? In the context of different countries and cultures, can the transformation of the nature of land will not be resulted as a commodities? Why do the right of land use can only be dominated by the government? Who can be allowed to change the use of land and who has the right to contaminate the soil? What kind of environment will we expect to hand-over to the next generation?

Through the performance art activity, The Five Elements – starting from the Earth, we hope to raise the public's attention to this critical land use issue. We do not simply use the method of concept to observe and present this issue but we use the nature of life to present it to the world. This is not just a description of life but a desire to achieve the original nature of life through creation. We use the most direct art form (body art / live performance) as a witness of martyrdom to close-up this issue. We hope to repair, examine, and reshape the trauma of society and to think about the meaning between land and human. We hope this project could inspire people with new interpretations of land use in contemporary cities and widen the vision of land use. The event will be held at Wang Chau and participating artists will do on-site creation through their personal experience and understanding on this issue. We will use our body as a medium to present Hong Kong's current land issues and reconstruct cultural ethics.

Hegemony and Creative Resistance

Land struggles and developer hegemony have regrettably become the status quo in Hong Kong. Biased media, capitalist sympathy and daily survival fails to connect a critical mass to land struggles such as the North East New Territories and Wang Chau Development plans. How have different groups organised a creative resistance to developer hegemony, and can this be built upon in ways that will redefine our understanding of land and the commons in Hong Kong?

"A Curve and A Line - Koanic Thinking on Performance Art-"
An old Zen Master was asked “Can a work of art be a koān?” The answer was clear, “Either it is a koān, or it is not a work of art”. But we may perceive similar aspirations, of penetrating into the nature of reality and its natural or fabricated textures. The lecture “A Curve and A Line - Koānic Thinking on Performance Art -” attempt to introduce the idea of a koan into Performance Art and Performance Art teaching. “Koānic thinking”, might find its place in guidance or accompany the art we do, because in a powerful way, it manifests radical aspirations towards our true nature and within: social change.

Art Experience Foundation proudly presents “Yes, and Now: a group exhibition of selected artists from First Smash 5”. A platform for potential contemporary artists based in Hong Kong, the fifth edition of “First Smash” will showcase the work of eight artists. Works to be shown range from paintings, photography, installations to video art. The project encourages emerging artists, who are ready to showcase their work and talent to a greater audience, to promptly embrace new opportunities as encapsulated by the motto “Yes, and Now”. To them, each and every exhibition opportunity is a precious experience, which further enhances their creative concepts and techniques.

The eight Hong Kong-based artists selected by the Foundation include graduates from local and overseas art academies and an undergraduate student.
