JUNE • A RAINY DAY WITHOUT RAIN

The work once appeared in an exhibition in 2018. The concept originates from a pair of microphones in a particular story, which symbolises the transmission of information, secrets and anticipation.
June kicks off the rainy season. It is also the time when my son learns to speak - Mama, dada, ducky, A a….such baby talk is really sweet to my heart.

Son, don’t you know you will know many more vocabularies in the future….

If you come to this exhibition, I would whisper in your ear,

“The rain will finally come, and the light will follow.“

OVER AND OVER AGAIN

Thinking over something or someone is an echo of recall, nostalgia, or persevering thinking. The melody that resembles the old tune keeps playing in our mind. This exhibition is composed of five graduate students of different years from the Art School. They collect fragments from the context of thinking over and over, and use different visual media such as photography, print transfer, painting, ceramics, etc. to reconstruct and present the things that have been trigger them.

However, it is hard to define whether this state begins with the context or art making itself.

SHORELESS. PAINTINGS AND INSTALLATION BY CARL CHENG CHI MING

"The road ahead is boundless, there is nowhere to return, when I look back, the love was so deep"

During seven years of struggle without a destined day for showing his works, the artist has been indulging in the trough of his personal life, or wandering in the social turmoil.

At the time of the weakest, it may be fate that brings the works of artist to the public finally. Although it is still not possible to present the artist's concept in the most comprehensive way, through this exhibition, the audience can read the artist's "inner landscape" over the past seven years and take a closer look at the artist's depiction of the greed of mankind to open up the earth, which reveals the various complexities of human nature.

This exhibition is the first part of a trilogy and will exhibit ten paintings and two installation artworks by the artist from 2014-21.

Hong Kong Art School Showcase Series @ Jockey Club Atrium

This series consists of four showcases, which are curated by Subject Coordinators / Lecturers of Hong Kong Art School with specialization correspondingly in the following four major disciplines: Ceramics, Painting, Photography and Sculpture.

Moiré : Silvester's Solo

When a set of lines or dots is superimposed on another set of lines or dots, a third, false pattern emerges in the form of “moiré pattern”. A similar visual perception can also occur when one looks close to the layer lines on 3D printed ceramics objects. Loose screws of the printer or slight difference in the clay consistencies, are the factors that caused changes in the layer width and height, producing unique objects. And these finest details suggest how the objects are made and hint the characteristics of clay.

Gleaning

【《拾遺 Gleaning 》 - 蕭文潔個展 Solo Exhibition by Kate Siu】

Solo Exhibition by Edith Wong Ka Yi

Inspired by the British sculptor Richard Wentworth, this exhibition uses sculptural collage to expand the interpretations of daily objects and the negative space around them. Through moulding, the cement, plaster and other raw materials with different urban wastes such as newspapers, expired eggs, and plastic lunch boxes are combined and transformed into new assemblages, subverting their original functions and extending their mobility for questioning the conventional object placement in urban landscape.

The juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated things, in spontaneous geometric forms, provides opportunities for us to recognise the neglected details in daily routine and rediscover the essence of things, or difference.

P4 Lab

Play 4 Laboratory
An art experiment to develop playful tools to reconnect Our Bodies with the City

Participating Artists:
C&G, Andio LAI, WONG Wing Tong(Tong), Rik YU Wing Kei

Concept:
During the pandemic, many cities were locked down, streets became deserted for months, and people were physically disconnected from each other and from their cities. Avoiding directly touching public facilities, many would use various tools to press buttons or push door handles in public space. These tools may help us stay away from germs and virus, but, at the same time, distance and disconnect us from our surroundings.
The current project attempts to develop different playful tools to help us re-enter our city in the post-pandemic era with our long-forgotten sensitivities.

Andio will make use of low-tech equipment to collect sound and play sound with our bodies in the city.
Rik will make use of pinhole photography, along with various tools, to rediscover the lights that once disappeared in his eyesights due to his previous illness.
C&G will begin with a question about Lo Ting, and develop tools to help search for Lo Ting’s traces in our city.
Tong will use drawing and micro-observational tools to discover the micro-sceneries that we often miss out.

In 2018, Chan Sai-lok launched his cultural identity series with red as the main motif during his residency as one of the prizes of winning the 2017 UOB Ink Art of the Year Award. After the solo exhibitions ‘Land of Longing and Exile’ (2019) and ‘Everyday Practice’ (2020) and residencies in New York and Denmark, he now invites three friends of his to interpret contemporary ink aesthetics, as a kind of postscript for the red series.
The curatorial framework appropriates the traditional genres of poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal and object. To Chan Sai-lok, text and literature are materials for creation. Not restricted to readable text, poetry can be purely a sequence of text, alternating rhythms or abstract formations. Fabric and silk are colours with which painting weaves narrative layers like a novel. Chui Pui-chee has a long calligraphy practice. As one entity, man and brush’s movement and momentum construct the essence of his ink practice. The complementary chemical reaction of ink and paper brings calligraphy art to another level. Pau Mo-ching focuses on the original usage of seal carvings as proof of identity and intent, where loyalty and justice manifest themselves within the square inch, symbolising a life lived tacitly. While these three play with the scholarly arts, Lau Hok-shing, on the other hand, occupies himself with antique objects. The miniature mountain compiled in layers on the scholar's desk evokes the mountain within us, while mirroring the scenery on the Cantonese opera stage.
The idea of ‘exhibition’ originated in 17th century Europe, whose focus on cultural heritage determined the design of the exhibition space. Regardless of aesthetic style, history and material characteristics, calligraphy, painting, text, seal and objects all have their own cultural contexts. Their appreciation therefore should constitute a separate discipline. Living in the culturally hybrid and technologically advanced modern city, how do artists open up an aesthetic world that is both traditional and new? How would they arrange the exhibition space to have a dialogue with the audience?

Human memory begins from "nothing", and "supplements" help us build a broader space for us to remember "important" matters. Yet with time, our memories slowly dwindle into "nothing".

We search through our memories using faint impressions, and among these scattered moments, we pick up a pen and force ourselves to remember, however fleeting each moment is. We find out that they are distorted and blurry. The pen scribbles repeatedly on the piece of paper, starting, then stopping, then starting again. It tries to pick up the broken fragments. It flickers and spins, twisting around above our heads.

< Cleaned Wall | now - 8 AUG >

The "Cleaned Wall" solo exhibition by Rebeka Tam has been started recently. Look forward to seeing you in the opening event on coming SAT (17 JUL).

Time remembers,

the tapes and papers which covered with dust, and

the traces that workers wanted to clean the walls.

Time also remembers,

The dirty water mark which stained the feet of the walls.

A public wall resembles a tree,

It stands there and experiences seasonal change,

It stands there and experiences social change, and acts of human.

Time helps to save layers of marks, experiences by the wall.

And I try to use clay,

Making use of its power to imprint,

to save a fragment of memory in our time.

‘Culturing’ borrows the meaning from the laboratory technique of growing microorganisms in a particular condition for research and development purposes. Culturing appears not at the beginning nor the end, but define the process, evolution, transformation and metamorphosis. As such, culturing also represents the graduating students who have grown and cultivated their art practices throughout the pandemic years.

This year’s Graduate Exhibition of the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme* is the culmination of the studies of 35 graduating students. Presenting in a diversity of art forms, which include painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, installation and video, the works represent the collective call of the graduating students in their understanding and pursuit of art.

Like the act of culturing, the Graduate Exhibition is neither the beginning nor the end; it is the process of evolution and creation of the graduating students, who will continue their art making with the cultivated mind, passion and belief in the future.

There is nothing left to say

Each of us may subconsciously place anxieties and aspirations in corners of the city. There isn't much text to read here, but you could explore each trivial thought hidden around, for what it is about, what is there left to say …

Founded in 1992, the Contemporary Ceramic Society (H.K.) is the first and most representative ceramist’s organisation in Hong Kong with the aim to promote local ceramic art. This exhibition is a joint venture between Sun Museum and the Society. It features the recent works of 26 Society’s members. Our tête-à-tête artist talks are back. This time we will have HK artist Kay Mei Ling Beadman introducing us to “The Invisible Child Grows Up” -- her online show in zizhi.art -- her practice in general, and her work with the Hidden Space -- an alternative art space in HK.

Kay Mei Ling Beadman is an artist, researcher and co-founder of Hidden Space, an independent artist-run space in Hong Kong.

She uses her own Chinese and English mixed race as an autoethnographic springboard to explore aspects of complex dual identity formation, drawing on embodied aspects of lived experience amid socio-politically and culturally constructed assumptions. Her practice is multidisciplinary and includes installation, video, painting, text and performance.

Kay was born in England, zigzagged between HK and UK growing up, but has lived and worked permanently in Hong Kong since 1999. She has a BFA from the University of Reading, UK, an MFA from RMIT, Australia and is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. She has exhibited in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the UK.

Artist:
Cathleen Lau is a Hong Kong-based artist who is devoted to developing her artworks with new concepts in sculpting space. She engages in producing sculpture complemented by large scale cross-media installations.

Cathleen graduated from the Hong Kong Art School (RMIT), majoring in sculpture. Her works explore the possibility of breaking through the inertia of sculpting materials. Her interests as well include constantly inventing “sustainable and renewable” substances. She is now molding and carving wood with inverted material that is in the form of sawdust, re-sculpting space with particular attention to materials and atmosphere. Her strength has been that of creating mixed-media sculptures and installations with different media carvings in the melting pot of new materials, light and shadow to present another set of conceivable atmospheres, through integrating the audience.

Cathleen received the scholarship program in her Bachelor’s degree, Reaching Out Scholarship which took her to Japan in order to experience Japanese culture extensively. She has exhibited multiple works, awarded Directors Choice Award 2018 Human Rights Art Prize, and also exhibited in Affordable Art Fair Young Talent 2018.
