CRITIQUE SESSION將由兩位RMIT講師指導，分別是Dr.Drew Pettifer和Dr. Peter Westwood，我們亦特意邀請了三位藝術家與他們的作品：Makkie Tang (painting) 2022、Kenneth Yuen (ceramics) 2022、Maria Cheung (photography) 2023，參與這次討論。

在過程中你的想法和回應將會引導討論，你會遇到不同年齡、文化背景的人交流意見，這是擴展思維和創造可能性的機會。

Our tête-à-tête artist talks are back. This time we will have HK artist Kay Mei Ling Beadman introducing us to “The Invisible Child Grows Up” -- her online show in zizhi.art -- her practice in general, and her work with the Hidden Space -- an alternative art space in HK.

Kay Mei Ling Beadman is an artist, researcher and co-founder of Hidden Space, an independent artist-run space in Hong Kong.

She uses her own Chinese and English mixed race as an autoethnographic springboard to explore aspects of complex dual identity formation, drawing on embodied aspects of lived experience amid socio-politically and culturally constructed assumptions. Her practice is multidisciplinary and includes installation, video, painting, text and performance.

Kay was born in England, zigzagged between HK and UK growing up, but has lived and worked permanently in Hong Kong since 1999. She has a BFA from the University of Reading, UK, an MFA from RMIT, Australia and is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. She has exhibited in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the UK.

Tête-à-tête is an open studio event where an artist or a curator is invited to present an art work or a group of works in the Shanghai studio of artist José Drummond or online via zoom. Tête-à-tête is a French expression meaning a private conversation between two persons.

ZÌZHÌ (自制) is a contemporary art multidisciplinary platform and incubator for experimentation on various mediums to inspire dialogue and creative connections. Operating nomadically and online ZÌZHÌ hosts exhibitions, video screenings, performances, and artist talks. The curatorial vision is informed by the idea of creating transnational and transcultural connections. ZÌZHÌ is a project of BABEL Cultural Organization initiated by José Drummond. ZÌZHÌ means homemade or DIY in Chinese and operates from Shanghai.

BABEL’s mission is to generate research and learning opportunities in the fields of contemporary art, architecture and environment. BABEL is conceived as a museum without walls and aims to work between cultures and across disciplines. To achieve its goals, BABEL establishes regional and international partnerships with institutions of recognized educational and cultural merit. Therefore a spirit of collaboration, and the creation of fruitful synergies, is essential to the fulfillment of BABEL mission.

高志強

自由攝影人，致力推動攝影教育。曾舉辦和參與多個本地及國際性的聯展及個展，本地個展包括「中港印象」(1993)，「藍調」，(1997)，「夜祭」( 2008) 及「懼曠」(2012)。高氏為香港專業攝師公會創會會員，曾任兩屆主席，現為榮譽會員。 並於2013至2017年曾經擔任香港國際攝影節主席，現為榮譽主席。

周佩霞

影像製作者，獨立研究員及策展人。策展項目包括：《境遇之間：六個女性攝影師的香港故事》、《攝影作為方法》、《牆2019》等。

關於藝術家

陳啟駿 MC (b.1980)

畢業於倫敦傳播學院及香港中文大學碩士課程，主修攝影，現為香港理工大學、香港公開大學及香港知專設計學院兼任講師。他是藝發局―倫敦藝術大學獎學金計劃得主，於2015年赴倫敦藝術大學深造。陳氏作品入選多個國際攝影獎，並於多個國際攝影節中展出。於2020年，陳氏於京都國際攝影節KG+Select中贏得 ”Paris Gallery Firstfloor Award”，並將於2021年於巴黎舉辦個展。其作品主要探討攝影文化、地景及都市人之間的關系，被私人及博物館收藏。

雕塑及裝置藝術家劉學成自幼喜愛收集小物，尤好香江舊物和舊日書刊，醉心物件背後的人情世態。從造型，材質，手藝中感受雅與美，弄物溯源，尋找當中的前因後果，源源不絕的創作靈感從舊器物中引發出來，令作品的意形游走於新舊之間，在當今世界急速運作得容不下丁點舊事舊物之際，獨自己微弱之力希望能守住舊歲月之同時，用當代藝術之手法創作新的路徑，為後世留下過去與當下的一點痕跡。

劉氏以雕塑和裝置為主要創作媒介，於2005年取得澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學藝術學士學位，並在2007年獲取該校的藝術碩士學位。

自2003年起，劉氏參與多個在香港舉辦的聯展，並在2006及2008年舉辦個人展覽《規律——劉學成個人行動》、《詩前想後》、《乞泉齋內的水動山靈》、《測不準定理》及《向你好說你好》。2007年被選為香港藝術推廣辦事處「藝遊鄰里計劃」的推介藝術家之一，2008年於美國波特蘭參與駐場藝術創作，並在2010至2014年多次於韓國參與藝術家駐場計劃。近年他的作品於世界各地展出，包括美國、澳洲、法國、韓國、中國大陸和香港，並成為本地和國際收藏家的藏品。他在2016年獲頒香港藝術發展獎——藝術新秀奬（視覺藝術）。

「肖像攝影的力量／權力的肖像」

近年，香港出現了不少有關運動的肖像攝影作品系列，如陳啟駿的《凝視》、范家朗的《十八港孩》、高仲明的《港傷》、林亦非的《香港：撕裂都市》，甚至是馬琼珠以人像抓拍再加工的《去年》系列，攝影師和藝術家對人物選取或呈現手法有同有異，然而都是香港歷史中非常重要的社會影像檔案。

是次WMA Open講座系列，名為「肖像攝影的力量／權力的肖像」，由周佩霞主持，邀請以上五位攝影師和藝術家，分享他們創作肖像系列的動機、取捨和反思。當中包括肖像攝影的現與隱、即時性與延擱、個體與集體的辯證關係等問題。透過對話，我們希望從中窺探這些個別的肖像系列，如何共同素描社會當下的權力版圖。

陳啟駿
陳啟駿MC 現為香港理工大學及香港知專設計學院兼任講師。作品入選多個國際攝影節及攝影獎，包括平遙國際攝影展、韓國東港國際攝影節、京都國際攝影節及哈蘇年度攝影師大獎、三影堂攝影獎和WMA大師攝影獎。2014年獲香港藝術發展局頒發獎學金，於倫敦傳播學院修讀碩士課程。作品為香港文化博物館收藏。

范家朗
范家朗2015年於香港大學二年級時開始其攝影旅程，為宿舍堂友和嘉賓拍攝人像。對「人」充滿好奇，鍾愛鑽研人類，喜讀人物訪談。畢業後為媒體和廣告擔任拍攝工作，同時進行個人創作。

高仲明
高仲明從事新聞攝影20年，一直關注的議題包括貧窮、無家者、少數族裔等。他憑《港傷》（2019）獲2020年索尼世界攝影大獎紀實類冠軍。高仲明亦是2012年WMA大師攝影獎「貧窮」得主。自2016年起，他成為香港樂施會的義務攝影師，拍攝該會不同地方的人道救援項目。

林亦非
林亦非的於攝影作品見於國際及本地媒體。作品《香港抗爭》獲得第77屆全球年度圖片獎「國內／國際新聞圖片故事組」的優秀獎，照片近日亦於2020年世界新聞攝影基金會的專題展覽「Be Water! The Strategy of Resistance in the Hong Kong Protests」中展出。

馬琼珠
馬琼珠從事繪畫、攝影及裝置藝術。在香港和英國接受教育，曾在香港舉辦多個個展，她亦參與多個中、港、台、巴基斯坦和澳洲等地的聯展。2008年，取得亞洲文化協會利希慎基金獎助金。2012年，榮獲香港當代藝術獎青年藝術家獎。

In recent years, Hong Kong has seen quite a number of photographic portrait series related to social movements. These include 'Gaze' by MC CHAN Kai Chun, 'My Portrait Diary - 18 Children' by FAN Kar Long, 'Wounds of Hong Kong' by KO Chung Ming, 'Hong Kong: A City Divided' by LAM Yik Fei and 'Last Year' by Ivy MA. Whilst variations exist in their subject matter, choices and artistic approaches, all these works constitute a valuable visual archive of Hong Kong’s recent history.

Our coming WMA Open Talk, titled 'The Power of Portrait/The Portrait of Power', will invite these five image makers to share with us the motives, selections and reflections in their processes of creation. We will also discuss issues related to body archive, including visibility and invisibility, immediacy and deference, individuality and collectivity. Through a dialogue moderated by Carol Chow, the talk seeks to explore how these individual portrait series may shed light on the underlying power relations that shape our society.

MC CHAN Kai Chun
MC CHAN Kai Chun is currently a part-time lecturer at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Design Institute. His work has been shortlisted for international photo festivals and awards, including Pingyao International Photography Festival, DongGang International Photo Festival, Kyoto International Photo Festival, Hasselblad Masters Award, the Three Shadows Photography Award and WMA Masters Award. In 2014, he was awarded a fellowship to complete his Master's degree in London College of Communication. His work is collected by Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Anthony Kar-Long FAN
Anthony Kar-Long FAN started his photography journey in 2015, during his second year in university that he made photographic portraits of his hallmates and ‘honourable guests’ at special ‘high table dinners’. Fan has remained his interest in studying people and reads public figures’ biographies and interviews. He shoots commercially for publications and advertisements, while he keeps developing his personal photography projects.

KO Chung Ming
KO Chung Ming is a Hong Kong photojournalist who focuses on issues of poverty, homelessness and ethnic minorities. Ko’s ‘Wounds of Hong Kong’ (2019) is named the winner in the Professional category of Documentary of Sony World Photography Awards 2020. Ko won the WMA Masters Award of the ‘Poverty’ cycle in 2012. Since 2016, Ko has become a volunteer photographer for Oxfam Hong Kong and photographs Oxfam’s humanitarian program in different countries.

LAM Yik Fei
LAM Yik Fei’s works have been featured in various international and local media. He is a recipient of the Award of Excellence in the category of National/International News Picture Story in 77th Pictures of the Year International with his work Hong Kong Protests. The series was recently exhibited in ‘Be Water! The Strategy of Resistance in the Hong Kong Protests’, a special exhibition by the World Press Photo in 2020.

Ivy MA
Ivy MA is a Hong Kong artist working in drawings, paintings, photography and mixed-media installation. Having studied in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, she has held a number of solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, and participated in group exhibitions in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Pakistan and Australia. She was an Asian Cultural Council grantee in 2007 and she received Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards, Young Artist Award in 2012.

約翰 · 伯格 (John Berger)曾於《觀看的視界》對比攝影與繪畫：「攝影是過去的紀錄，而繪畫則是從過去接受到的預言，預言觀看者在那個時刻從繪畫看到的東西。」 照片和繪畫同為靜態影像，因此有不少畫家也會從攝影獲取創作靈感，讓攝影和繪畫有著密切的關係。

那麼在攝影普及的當代，攝影與繪畫會否有一種新的關係？而攝影師對繪畫及創作又有甚麼看法？在這次座談會，我們邀請到陳育強（香港藝術學院署理院長）及周佩霞（影像及文化研究員及獨立策展人）分享攝影與繪畫之間的微妙關係，發掘兩者的創作節奏與自身環境的互動。

John Berger compares photography with painting in “The Sense of Sight”,
“Photographs are records of the past; while paintings are prophecies received from the past, prophecies about what the spectator is seeing in front of the painting at that moment.” Nevertheless, as both media exist in static forms, many painters collect inspirations from photographs, which creates an intimate relationship between photography and painting in the process of art-making.

In addition, when photography has become a common practice in our everyday life, would there be any changes in its relationship with painting? And what does the photographer think about painting and art creation? In this forum, we invite Kurt Chan (Acting Director of Hong Kong Art School) and Carol Chow (image culture researcher, independent curator) to shed light on the intriguing relationship between photography and painting and explore both media’s rhythm and interactions with their environment.

Alongside the exhibition “In the Course of Dancing, from Nightfall to Darkness”, which is now on view at the Gallery of Hong Kong Art School (exhibition extended to 23 May, please check the School’s website for the latest opening hours), we also invite the curator, exhibiting artists and committee members of HKAS Alumni Network to join the discussion and share their experiences with us.

About the speakers

Kurt Chan
Prof. Kurt, Chan Yuk Keung is an artist as well as an educator. He is now working as the Acting Head of Hong Kong Art School. His research interests cover a wide range of topics such as Hong Kong Art, Art in public realm and mixed media, whereas the outputs mostly presented as exhibition, curatorship, and publication.

Carol Chow
Carol Chow, image culture researcher, independent curator. Previous curation includes “A room with a View”, “Photography as Methods”, “Wall 2019”, etc.
