Ivy Ma 馬琼珠 - Think of Wind 想風

176223743_222182779678145_5804947458950613231_n.jpg

Imagery of Wind - “To contemplate the wind is no easy task. Its trials are needed to accomplish, such as: the rolling waves of the sea, the rustling of leaves and the dancing shadows of the trees. On the way to Peng Chau on a half-open deck, the wind sweeps away the moisture in my eyes, and my brain can’t help but keep my eyes blinking excessively; as if I was in a state of emergency. ‘I’ once told me, a few years ago when she was traveling back and forth on a ferry between Lamma Island and the city, the wind was always there to keep her company. Now, the wind appears as usual, but I guess the scents and sounds carried along are no longer the same. Wind, an auxiliary word for memories.
The humid wind bears a slightly cool temperature and evokes the feeling of standing by the window. Mist infiltrates the room, leaving its marks on bodies, walls, floors and every existing object; it mumbles, “Please let me stay here just a little while, then take me somewhere far away.”

Ivy Ma employs unconventional painting techniques to depict the relationship between still life and space. Through the interplay of subtracting and adding elements to images, she elevates her emotions into visual forms with diverse materials. Recently, Ivy has undergone life changes that propel her to restore the long-lost tranquility in life. Her works in this exhibition attribute to the spontaneity of wind, which blur the boundaries of spatiality. The artist responds to her innate sensitivity to light and shadow and invites viewers to enter her uncanny and unintelligible world in hues of black, white and grey. Daily objects are still kept in their places playing their parts, while at this particular moment, the artist is taking us to a leap into the wind and drift between the outside and inside of a window.

Ivy Ma is a Hong Kong artist working in drawings, paintings, photography and mixed-media installation. Having studied fine art in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, she has held a number of solo exhibitions in Hong Kong. She was an Asian Cultural Council grantee in 2007 and she received Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards, Young Artist Award in 2012. Her series of works 'Last Year' (2015) was collected by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in 2020.

Touch Gallery and curator Shirky Chan are pleased to present an exhibition of poetic works by Ivy Ma in May. Ivy’s distinctive style offers the public a fresh perspective from the conventional impressions of painting. The multi-layered monochrome subdues noises on images and encapsulates the essence of the thematic. She also uses lines and planes to delineate and interweave space and still life. Concurrently, the gallery is showcasing Hong Kong ceramic artist Annie Wan’s paper-porcelain works. Both artists’ works express their respective minimalistic and tranquil aesthetic on their chosen medium.

Curator : Shirky Chan

So I say, “It’s a landscape painting.” is an exhibition by six Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) alumni who are from the class of 2017, majored in painting. As enthusiastic painters, the exhibition showcases their ongoing investigation into the role of painting in the construction of a unique language. From scribbling of everyday thoughts, photos to paintings, the artists disclose their personal narratives bound up with their own biography, revealing events, dreams or emotional states.

Whereas the paratext of the exhibition hints upon the generic idea of “landscape painting”, the curator has written a note for guidance:

Once the painting is completed, death begins; “it” will sink endlessly and dissolve in the cold shards of ultramarine, which is infinite.
Some infer that the shards must contain an absolute sky. I prefer to dream that the surface represents a world reduced to a smooth vertical surface, like a slab of opaque glass. And when you look through the glass, you shall see birds singing as if they are hiccuping in a blue forest.
Now you might ask what is “it” to be exact, but to speak of it is to refuse. So I say, “It’s a landscape painting.”
—Kong Chun Nga, Kitty

Piercing from the front of the camera lens to the scene behind, female photographers project their anxiety, yearning, and personal feelings onto abstraction, presented in various visual media; giving us a glimpse of their internal world from female perspectives.

Photography is by default associated with unyielding and perhaps cold objectivity, but female photographers are often able to break through that shackle with their sensibility, bending light and shadow into optic poetry.

Through photography, five esteemed female artists from the Hong Kong Art School’s Higher Diploma in Fine Art / Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programmes with a major in Photography, lend passage into their multi-faceted internal world of thoughts and ideologies.

122602512_111821430714281_3457837706527372346_o.jpg

To celebrate the founding of Touch Gallery, we are honored to present Kurt Chan as our first highlight of the month, showcasing his Western paintings and ink works “Fa-mular”.

In this exhibition, he explores the energies and momentums of flowers, linking nature to human life. Just as the cycle of human life, flowers grow, bloom and wither. Though flower formula is just a standardized construct for flowers, our imagination upon flowers still blooms wild. Kurt Chan’s “Fa-Mular” presents the polymorphous essence of flowers with his signature blend of Chinese and Western art. Points, lines and surfaces combines, infiltrates and interacts, allowing viewers to feel not only the interconnection of lines and surfaces, but also of the action of painting and strokes. Leveraging his paintbrushes, Chan touches, writes and molds flowers otherwise.

Two years after the establishment of Touch Ceramics, Touch Gallery, opening in November 2020, exhibits artists' painting and ceramic art. Showcasing two -dimensional artworks in the same site, a unique dynamic is created, exploring the possibilities between ceramic art and other media, and thus cultivating a brand new stimulating visual experience for viewers.

Unceramic

The word “Ceramic” can be traced back to the Greek term κέραμος (keramos), which means “a potter” or “pottery”. It is related to an older Sanskrit root, which means “to burn”. Thus, the early Greeks used the term to describe “burned stuff” or “fired earth”.

What does “Ceramic” mean now?

9 alumni (Major in Ceramics) from different backgrounds and cohorts attempt to reexamine this question in a contradictory way and use “unfired” clay to express their own ideas in this “Unceramic” exhibition.

What role does unfired clay play in the so-called “contemporary ceramic art”?

Organized by Hong Kong Art School (a division of Hong Kong Arts Centre), this exhibition showcases the artworks created by four painting graduates of the School’s Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme, as well as a piece of poem by a local writer.

Residue does not refer to the left over in daily life. It is a psychological impact like ripples on a pond, formed by the unusual incidents which happen in history, entwinning and unabatedly echoing in one’s mind.

Residue is the detached part isolated from its main body. It is equivalent to either the fragments of brutal memories which are hard to look back on; or content which is buried or left aside intentionally or unintentionally.

Those dismemberments reveal themselves repeatedly in the form of scattered dots, broken lines and flaky layers; sometimes solid sometimes airy.

All artworks included in this exhibition are done with the most basic drawing mediums, graphite and charcoals on paper. Louise LEE has been collecting the mass media images since last year. With her proficient charcoal drawing skill, she has repetitively re-constructed and effaced the original until a paradoxical image has emerged. The urban wanderer Argus FONG leads viewers to his selected nameless places. They are murky and desolate realms which through his depiction allows the viewer to dwell and contemplate within. June WONG shows her sketches and drafts which supposedly serve the process of producing an animation. They are those provisional and primitive segments, sincere and enchanting. TANG Kwong San pays tribute to his lost mother by painstakingly drawing her belongings with a mechanical pencil. His drawing captures the weight and the physical interrelationship of these very personal objects.

At the same time, Louise Law was invited to make a poem which will be an added visual element in this exhibition. The poem, titled “A Chill Seeps into the Air”, was assembled from what she has described as “residue of emotions”. These “residue of emotions” are those transitional states of an idea, which lie between an embrace and abandonment. They often present ambiguously. One can only be aware of it in absolute stillness.

Artist Bio

Argus FONG’s work is like a collection of piecemeal fragments in his everyday life - a collection of seemingly unrelated bits and parts as in a photomontage. The work reflects his interpretations on identities and human natures.
Inspired by the traces on the objects, most of his works are oil paintings on wasted materials, and are characterised by his expressive linear brushstrokes.

Louise Lee, graduated from RMIT, Melbourne. Lee obtained her Master of Fine Art in 2003, specialized in Drawing. Lee has participated in many solo and joint exhibitions in different countries including the "interlude", in Melbourne and “On Drawing” in Hong Kong in 2018. She is currently an Art teacher in Hong Kong Japanese School and a part-time lecturer in Hong Kong Art School.
Lee's humanist impulse has been the major current in sustaining her art practice. She scans, examines and displays the harmony and conflict of human being under different circumstances.

“In the course of Dancing, from Nightfall to Darkness” is the world of city dwellers caught in the becoming of darkness. They respond to the absence of the light and the invasion of the black through the act of painting, to withstand and resist with their conscious minds, moving bodies and involuntary strokes.

The act of creation – at times flowing, at times staying still; sometimes repetitive, sometimes spontaneous – is a process of connecting the outside and the inside. Every painter has her own way of moving her hands and body – her unique dance – is an interaction with time, space and herself, through leaving marks on surfaces.

The exhibition is an experiential journey orchestrated with paintings and media artworks by five artists. The audience are invited to enter from any point of departure, to encounter motion and rhythm from within, among and beyond the imagery.

Dance along.

In the course of Dancing, from Nightfall to Darkness
Exhibition Period: 21 Mar – 27 Apr 2020
Time : 11am – 8pm (Closed on Sundays & Public Holidays)
Venue : The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School, 10/F, Hong Kong Arts Centre

Annouchka Brochet(俄羅斯):

Eva Peterson Lenassi(斯洛文尼亞):

Wonjae Jo(南韓):

加藤直樹Naoki Kato(日本):

Sylvain Thirouin(法國):

阮素玲Yuen So Ling(香港):

On Earth” Ceramics Festival

You are cordially invited to join the Opening Ceremony of
On Earth Ceramics Festival 2019
Opening Ceremony: 6/12/2019, 6pm
Exhibition Period: 7/12/2019 – 5/1/2020
Time: 12:00 – 20:00 (Daily)
Venue: L0 & L1 Galleries, JCCAC

“On Earth” Ceramics Festival
The city and the rural are interdependent, the pace of development between them is different and gradually the communication in between becomes deficient and alienated. Rachel Cheung, the curator of “On Earth” Ceramics Festival, employs ceramics as the main medium and invites artists to encounter with the nature, to create artworks that share their ideas and expectation toward the city and the rural, in order to foster the importance of balance and coexistence between “city and rural” and “nature and modernization”.

Ceramic art and education are becoming more and more popular in Hong Kong. It may be a good timing now to present this event as a ceramics festival so as to reflect the current situation of the diversified development of ceramic art. In this festival, artists are invited to explore the “people”, “land”, “resources” and “urban-rural” in nowadays’ Hong Kong from a multi-angle perspective. It also hopes to promote the concept of rural sustainability and urban-rural coexistence through art to linkage different communities. This festival is a good opportunity to unite the ceramic practitioners in Hong Kong and to positioning and stimulate the development of contemporary ceramic art. *

“On Earth” Ceramics Festival is the themed exhibition of JCCAC’s annual art festival, which is co-presented by Unit Gallery and JCCAC, and curated by Rachel Cheung, the founder of the Unit Gallery. Under the Festival, there are three exhibitions: On Earth Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition, Exhibition of Lai Chi Wo Art Project, and Artists’ Studio Open cum Exhibition. There are also fringe activities: art talks, art demonstrations, workshop and exhibition guided tours.

**Heartfelt thanks to the JCCAC, the Policy for Sustainability Lab of the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong (the “Co-creation of the Community” Scheme under the “HSBC Rural Sustainability” Programme) and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council for their generous supports.

By the Window - a painting exhibition

By the Window.jpg

1a space proudly presents BY THE WINDOW, a painting exhibition showcases the artworks of 9 Hong Kong artists.

If you have ever flipped over a painting (those canvases on a wooden frame), you will find the structure of the frame is similar to a window.  When you look at a painting, the first thing that you see would be the image itself.  But in fact what takes place is a transposition where the viewer enters the artist's point of view and see what they see.

Yet where are the artists? They could be working in the studio, walking on the street or anywhere in the world. However, when a painting is exhibited for public viewing, the artist presence is removed and excluded from the boundaries of the painting.

Sigmund Freud once said that the artist takes pleasure in hiding and secretly observing the audience standing in front of their own painting. The eyes of the artist and the audience may never meet.  They will watch the scenery alone.  But at the same time they wait for the change of scenery by the window together.

In this painting exhibition, the curator and exhibiting artist Ivy Ma, cooperated with Tsang Chui Mei, Heung Kin Fung, Sim Chan, Chan Sin Hang, Lau Yin Yeung, Fong Tsz Leong, Kan Kiu Sin and Kong Chun Nga, along with their latest artworks.

Ivy also wrote a statement for the exhibition entitled "Nine clues before, during and after the curation", aiming to provide some supplementary information to the audience before their visit.

Beyond 1 Kilo - a ceramic exhibition

The concept for this exhibition, ‘One Kilo’ was sparked by an experimental assignment given to five emerging ceramic practitioners whilst undertaking their first year of studies (BA in Fine Art) at Hong Kong Art School. One kilogram of malleable clay was given to each artist. They were encouraged to explore it, to challenge their existing perception of clay, and to discover extreme possibilities away from conventional clay-making. They all started from the same point for this exhibition yet arrived at very different and creative results.

Clay is the major material for ceramic art. Clay may have a heavier visual weight than physical weight or vice versa. Clay is a unique material as compared to other materials; it gains or loses weight depending on the moisture enclosed as well as the firing processes it undergoes. So when is the correct time to determine the weight of a piece of clay? Or, is the more important issue actually beyond the weight?

Using ‘weight’ as the ignition point for this exhibition, the concept of “One Kilo” has travelled beyond the obvious. With imagination and exploration these ceramic artists have enhanced their own practice and created work that is meaningful and memorable.

Jonathan TSANG Yat Wing’s piece A Litre of Tears explores the notion that emotions have weight. “We often talk about something being light-hearted or someone having a heavy heart. I created a series of books that represent the letters written by soldiers during wartime“ states Jonathan.

Weighty Propositions by Geoffrey Palmer plays with the notion that weight cannot be seen. Geoff’s work intends to mislead the viewer by balancing objects precariously upon each other in seemingly impossible arrangements.

Kate SIU Man Kit’s work for this exhibition takes the form of a daily diary. Kate recorded the conversations that she had with her Japanese Sensei during a week in December. He Makes Me Love Clay translates their daily dialogue into objects.

Sara HUNG Lok Man’s work, Gentle Breath is in relation to a verse in the Bible where man received the Holy Spirit through Jesus. Her touching hybrid forms demonstrate a sensitive, poetic aesthetic.

Another series of work is all about the healing process. “Tread Softly is all about remembering to slow down and allowing other people to help ” states Sharyn Wortman. Her series of fragile porcelain forms precariously rise into the air, challenging the stable ground below.

Rachel Cheung the curator of this show states, “the first time I encountered these artists I felt their energetic, lively and passionate attitudes towards exploring ceramic art. This joint exhibition showcases their fresh ideas and outcomes that were based on their individual research around the same topic.”

Geoffrey Palmer「

Sharyn Wortman

Sharyn WORTMAN

Peck-eyes Ravens is the first solo exhibition by Tobe Kan Kiu Sin. The artist is obsessed with psychoanalysis, to study her own state, explore and retrospect to the causality. She would like to reveal these psychological sceneries with drawings rather than being lost in language. The exhibition title is derived from a Spanish proverb “Cría cuervos y te sacarán los ojos” (Raise ravens and they’ll pluck out your eyes) which is also the title of a movie directed by Carlos Saura.
